Sammanfattning : Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) affects 1 – 3% of all children aged 10 – 16 years; of these approximately 80% are girls. Scoliosis surgery is a major (one of the most extensive) elective paediatric orthopaedic procedure and is known to cause severe and excruciating pain that requires advanced postoperative pain management. Sammanfattning : Abstract The overall aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about underlying causes and perioperative risk factors of Acute Confusional State (ACS) in elderly patients with hip fracture and to investigate the effect of a multi-factorial intervention program in order to decrease the number of patients who develop ACS. The aim in paper I was to describe elderly patients with hip fracture on the basis of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ ASA classification system and to identify preoperative risk factors in relation to the postoperative outcome measured up to 4-months after surgery. Sammanfattning : Surgical interventions create real, imagined, or potential fear or anxiety in many children, thus highlighting a need for the health professionals who work with them to increasingly act as facilitators. The overall aim of the present thesis was to gain a deeper understanding of 3-11 year-old children’s perioperative symptoms, signs, experiences and main concerns when attending hospital for day surgery and of how they manage this situation.
