1. Acute Confusional State in Elderly Patients with Hip Fracture. Identification of risk factors and intervention using a prehospital and perioperative management program
Sammanfattning : Abstract The overall aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about underlying causes and perioperative risk factors of Acute Confusional State (ACS) in elderly patients with hip fracture and to investigate the effect of a multi-factorial intervention program in order to decrease the number of patients who develop ACS. The aim in paper I was to describe elderly patients with hip fracture on the basis of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ ASA classification system and to identify preoperative risk factors in relation to the postoperative outcome measured up to 4-months after surgery. 2. Mortality in Oxygen-Dependent Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Possibilities for Pharmacological Interventions
Sammanfattning : Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major and rising cause of mortality worldwide, especially in women. Patients with chronic hypoxia owing to COPD are treated with long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) but have high morbidity and mortality. LÄS MER
3. Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy : studies on methods for the diagnosis of carcinoma of the lung, bronchial mucosal damage and haemodynamic effects
Sammanfattning : The diagnostic accuracy attained with the use of transbronchial fine needle aspiration biopsy, aspiration of bronchial secretion, bronchial washing, brush biopsy and forceps biopsy via a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope was compared in patients with carcinoma of the lung. In endoscopic visible tumours the sensitivity of forceps biopsy was higher than that of the other methods. LÄS MER
4. Severe hypoxemia during apnea in humans : influence of cardiovascular responses
Sammanfattning : When a diving human holds his or her breath, the heart beat slows and the blood vessels constrict in large portions of the body. In diving mammals such as seals, similar responses effectively conserve oxygen for the brain, enabling them to dive very deep and to stay underwater for a long time. LÄS MER
5. Assessment of chest physiotherapy in children
Sammanfattning : Chest physiotherapy (CPT) is used to improve the lung function and blood gas tensions in individuals with respiratory disease. The aim of this thesis was to assess and compare immediate effects of CPT with positive expiratory pressure (PEP) and oscillating PEP (OscPEP) on blood gas tensions in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), to assess effects of CPT with PEP in severely disabled children, to describe and evaluate a new CPT method for children who cannot co-operate, and to compare obtained results with chest clapping.
