   Sammanfattning : Clinically, injuries affecting the spinal cord or peripheral nerves can leave those affected with severe disability and, at present, there are limited options for treatment. Peripheral nerve injury with a significant gap between the proximal and distal stumps is currently treated with autologous nerve grafting but this is limited by availability of donor nerve and has associated morbidities.    Sammanfattning : Neuropeptide expression in the nervous system is abundant and plastic, and an altered expression after injury is an example of a functional response, helping the neuron to cope with adverse changes, and involves effects on differentiation, synthesis, repair/regeneration, survival, and modulation of signal transmission. I have investigated the distribution/expression of the neuropeptides, orphanin FQ/nociceptin (OFQ/N) and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP), under normal conditions, in response to nerve injuries, and also studied sensory responses in mice deficient for the PAC1 receptor (PAC1-/-).    Sammanfattning : Approximately one in four men will have surgery for ingunial hernia in their lifetime. In Sweden, 16 000 procedures are performed each year. To investigate the possible link between handling of nerves and sensory disturbance, 97 groins in 92 patients were examined one year after inguinal hernia surgery. LÄS MER
