1. PACAP and orphanin FQ/nociceptin -Distribution, importance and regulation in sensory neurons and spinal cord
Sammanfattning : Neuropeptide expression in the nervous system is abundant and plastic, and an altered expression after injury is an example of a functional response, helping the neuron to cope with adverse changes, and involves effects on differentiation, synthesis, repair/regeneration, survival, and modulation of signal transmission. I have investigated the distribution/expression of the neuropeptides, orphanin FQ/nociceptin (OFQ/N) and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP), under normal conditions, in response to nerve injuries, and also studied sensory responses in mice deficient for the PAC1 receptor (PAC1-/-). 2. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning
Sammanfattning : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning. 3. The role of neuropeptides in spinal nociceptive mechanisms with special emphasis on galanin, neuropeptide Y and orphanin FQ/nociceptin
Sammanfattning : Several peptides present in sensory neurons and in the spinal cord have been recognized to have inhibitory action in nociception. In this thesis, we have used the flexor reflex preparation in rats to study the role of several proposed inhibitory neuropeptides, galanin, galanin message-associated peptide (GMAP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), orphanin FQ and nocistatin in spinal nociceptive processing under normal conditions, after inflammation or peripheral nerve injury. 4. Neuropeptides and spinal antinociception : studies on galanin, nociceptin and endomorphin
Sammanfattning : Nociception and/or the sensation of pain is essential for the survival of the organism. Just as important are the antinociceptive mechanisms that reduce the nociceptive input and perceived pain. Without such mechanisms, it would be impossible to turn ones focus away from even the most minor painful stimulus. LÄS MER
