  1. 11. Mitochondrial function in human skeletal muscle: with special reference to exercise and training

    Författare :Michail Tonkonogi; Högskolan Dalarna; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :aerobic metabolism; oxidative phosphorylation; mitochondria; oxygen utilisation; citrate synthase; ADP sensitivity; ATP; muscle fibres; hydrogen ions; lactate; free radicals; proton leak; uncoupling; exercise; aerobic metabolism; oxidative phosphorylation; mitochondria; oxygen utilisation; citrate synthase; ADP sensitivity; ATP; muscle fibres; hydrogen ions; lactate; free radicals; proton leak; uncoupling; exercise;

    Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis was to study the adaptation of oxidative function in human skeletal muscle to acute exercise of different modes, intensities and durations, and to endurance training. The effects of endurance training on mitochondrial function were evaluated in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies by measurements of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in isolated mitochondria and permeabilised muscle fibres and measurements of mitochondrial ATP production rate in isolated mitochondria. 2. 12. The Role of Mitochondrial Uncoupling in the Development of Diabetic Nephropathy

    Författare :Malou Friederich Persson; Fredrik Palm; Richard K. Porter; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kidney; mitochondria; Uncoupling Protein-2; Adenosine Nucleotide Transporter; uncoupling; diabetes; diabetic nephropathy; db db; dinitrophenol; Coenzyme Q10; oxygen; rats; mice; Physiology; Fysiologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetes is closely associated with increased oxidative stress, especially originating from the mitochondria. A mechanism to reduce increased mitochondria superoxide production is to reduce the mitochondria membrane potential by releasing protons across the mitochondria membrane. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Mitochondrial form and function in pancreatic β-cells and brown adipocytes

    Författare :Jakob D Wikström; Jan Nedergaard; Roberta Gottlieb; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mitochondria; beta cells; brown adipose tissue; diabetes; obesity; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the role of mitochondria in pancreatic β-cells and brown adipose tissue (BAT). Two main aspects of mitochondria were explored; mitochondrial functional efficiency and the interrelationship between mitochondrial shape and function. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Preparation of leaf mitochondria and studies on mitochondrial photorespiratory reactions

    Författare :Per Gardeström; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; leaf mitochondria; photorespiration; aqueous two-phase system; Percoli gradient; cytochromes; glycine decarboyxlase; serine hydroxymethyltransferase; inhitors of photorespiration;

    Sammanfattning : A procedure for the preparation of spinach leaf mitochondria was developed. The procedure combines differential centrifugation, partition in dextran- polyethyleneglycol two-phase system and Percoli density gradient centri- fugation. The different steps separate the material mainly according to size, surface properties and density, respectively. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Ischemic and Hypoglycemic Brain Damage, Involvement of the Mitochondrial Permeability Transition Pore

    Författare :Hans Friberg; Lund Wallenberg Neurocentrum; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mitochondrial permeability transition pore; mitochondria; apoptosis; neuronal death; brain; ischemia; hypoglycemia; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Brain damage from ischemia-reperfusion and hypoglycemia are major causes of morbidity and mortality. Therapeutic strategies include hypothermia, glutamate-receptor blockade, immunosuppression and lately treatment aiming at preserving mitochondrial integrity and function. LÄS MER
