1. Mitochondrial function in human skeletal muscle: with special reference to exercise and training
Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis was to study the adaptation of oxidative function in human skeletal muscle to acute exercise of different modes, intensities and durations, and to endurance training. The effects of endurance training on mitochondrial function were evaluated in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies by measurements of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in isolated mitochondria and permeabilised muscle fibres and measurements of mitochondrial ATP production rate in isolated mitochondria. 2. Oxidant-induced cell death in lymphocytes: mechanisms of induction and resistance
Sammanfattning : Reactive oxygen species (oxidants, oxygen radicals) produced by the phagocytic NADPH oxidase have pivotal roles in immunity. Patients lacking a functional NADPH oxidase suffer from chronic granulomatous disease, which is characterized by recurring bacterial infections and thus manifesting the importance of reactive oxygen species in host defense against bacteria. 3. The role of exercise and exercise-related factors in the control of mitochondrial oxidative function
Sammanfattning : The effects of exercise and exercise-related factors on the control of mitochondrial oxidative function were investigated in human and rat skeletal muscle. Oxidative function was assessed through the measurement of oxygen consumption in chemically permeabilized (skinned) fibers. LÄS MER
4. Variability and adaptation in the contractile system of smooth muscle
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the large diversity of the contractile properties in smooth muscle. Six studies, I-VI, are included. I: a slow smooth muscle (aorta) has a different nucleotide and phosphate dependence compared to a fast type (taenia coli). LÄS MER
5. Intracellular mechanisms of skeletal muscle fatigue : role of creatine kinase
Sammanfattning : During intense physical activity the maximal power output of skeletal muscles is reduced, a condition described as muscle fatigue. The cause of impaired muscle function seen in fatigue is multifactorial. LÄS MER
