26. Studies of DNA repair strategies in response to complex DNA damages
Sammanfattning : The main aim of this thesis was to study the role of the indirect actions of γ-rays and α-particles on the complexity of primary DNA damages and the repair fidelity of major DNA repair pathways: non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), homologous recombination repair (HRR) and base excision repair (BER). The complexity of radiation-induced damages increases and the proximity between damages decreases with increasing LET due to formation of ionization clusters along the particle track. LÄS MER

28. Characterizing and modulating the effects of ionizing radiation to the juvenile hippocampus
Sammanfattning : Survival rates after childhood cancer treatment have improved, leading to a growing population of survivors. Radiotherapy is an important tool for curing cancer in the brain. Unfortunately, radiotherapy is associated with late side effects e.g. LÄS MER
29. Neonatal Exposure to Low-Dose Ionizing Radiation in Mice : Developmental Neurotoxic Effects of Single and Fractionated Doses and Interaction with Nicotine
Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to investigate the developmental neurotoxic effects of low-dose exposure to ionizing radiation, alone or together with nicotine, during a defined critical period of neonatal brain development in mice. Investigation of neurotoxic effects following fractionated or acute low-dose radiation, resembling the clinical situation during repeated CT scans or radiation delivered to non-target tissue during radiotherapy, and possible interaction effects with other agents, is of great importance for risk and safety evaluation. 30. New tools for probing biological extremes of ionizing radiation
Sammanfattning : Three different biological extremes of irradiation of living organisms, both human and animal, have been investigated and are presented in this thesis. Central to the thesis is the concept of bystander effects of ionizing radiation, i.e. LÄS MER
