6. Evolution of Antibiotic Resistance
Sammanfattning : The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is a major global threat to modern medicine. The rapid dissemination of resistant pathogens and the associated loss of efficacy of many important drugs needs to be met with the development of new antibiotics and alternative treatment options. 7. Evolutionary Mechanisms Shaping Bacterial Translation Termination
Sammanfattning : Translation termination in bacteria involves precise reading of stop codons (UAA, UAG, UGA) and coordinated peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis by the class-I release factors (RFs) on the ribosome (70S). This thesis investigates the evolutionary and post-translational modification mechanisms of these RFs and the concurrent effect on bacterial translation termination. LÄS MER
8. Development and Stability of Antibiotic Resistance
Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance is of current concern. Bacteria have become increasingly resistant to commonly used antibiotics and we are facing a growing resistance problem. The present thesis was aimed at studying the impact of antibiotic treatment on pathogenic bacteria as well as on the normal human microbiota, with focus on resistance development. LÄS MER
9. Evolutionary Dynamics of Mutation and Gene Transfer in Bacteria
Sammanfattning : The study of bacterial evolution is fundamental for addressing current problems of antibiotic resistance and emerging infectious diseases and lays a solid foundation for successful and rational design in biotechnology and synthetic biology. The main aim of this thesis is to test evolutionary hypotheses, largely based on theoretical considerations and sequence analysis, by designing scenarios in a laboratory setting to obtain experimental data. 10. Removal and Replacement of Ribosomal Proteins : Effects on Bacterial Fitness and Ribosome Function
Sammanfattning : Protein synthesis is a complex process performed by sophisticated cellular particles known as ribosomes. Although RNA constitutes the major structural and functional component, ribosomes from all kingdoms contain an extensive array of proteins with largely undefined functional roles. LÄS MER
