6. Probabilistic Modelling of Domain and Gene Evolution
Sammanfattning : Phylogenetic inference relies heavily on statistical models that have been extended and refined over the past years into complex hierarchical models to capture the intricacies of evolutionary processes. The wealth of information in the form of fully sequenced genomes has led to the development of methods that are used to reconstruct the gene and species evolutionary histories in greater and more accurate detail. 7. Towards simulating fully charged protein-DNA systems in water : Zif268-DNA as a test case
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, we develop a computing strategy to simulate fully charged protein-DNA systems with a general force field (GROMOS87). The ions neutralizing the phosphates (P-ions) are submitted to global symmetry constraints. A model exhibiting ionic-atmosphere effects on mobile P-ions was implemented via very weak restraint forces. LÄS MER
8. Life will find a way : Structural and evolutionary insights into FusB and HisA
Sammanfattning : How do microbes adapt to challenges from the environment? In this thesis, two distinct cases were examined through structural and biochemical methods. In the first, we followed a real-time protein evolution of HisA to a novel function. The second case was fusidic acid (FA) resistance mediated by the protein FusB in Staphylococcus aureus. LÄS MER
9. Function and regulation of the Yeast Mig1 repressor
Sammanfattning : Glucose repression is a global regulatory response in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Thus, in the presence of glucose, the preferred carbon source, expression of many genes encoding proteins required for metabolism of other carbon sources are turned off.An important mediator of glucose repression is the Mig1 repressor. 10. Regulation of the vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype
Sammanfattning : Smooth muscle cells (SMC) are present in many internal organs such as the blood vessels and the gastrointestinal channel. Their main functions are to provide stability to the tissue and to provide contractile capability. SMC are not terminally differentiated but can switch between several phenotypes, which is also known as phenotypic modulation. LÄS MER
