1. Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Tumor Growth Inhibition and Cartilage Differentiation
Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis has been focused on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). In the two first studies, the effects of MSCs on tumor growth and development in vitro and in vivo was investigated. LÄS MER
2. Inhibition of PDGF receptor signaling in tumor stroma : Effects on interstitial hypertension, drug uptake and therapeutic response
Sammanfattning : The role of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) in malignancies involves both autocrine and paracrine stimulation of cells within the tumor. The interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) is one of the forces that govern the transvascular flow of fluids. LÄS MER
3. Growth factor signaling in the breast tumor microenvironment
Sammanfattning : Cancer represents a collection of malignancies characterized by an aberrant expansion of cells. This unrestrained growth is the result of the acquisition of several pro-survival features and the evasion of cellular fail-safe mechanisms, collectively known as the hallmarks of cancer. LÄS MER
4. Neuropilin-1 regulation of tumor vascularization and growth
Sammanfattning : Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from existing ones, is dysregulated during tumor progression as a result of chronic hypoxia and inflammation. Such alterations lead to a lack of vessel hierarchy, and the formation of poorly perfused, leaky and blunt-ended vessels, contributing to disease progression. LÄS MER
5. NO, Immunosuppression and Tumor Immmunotherapy
Sammanfattning : This study aims at clarifying the role of NO in the immunosuppression induced by in vivo tumor growth and by tumor immunotherapy, and determining whether the inhibition of NO production can be used as an adjuvant in tumor immunotherapy. We have shown previously that tumor cells, glioma (N32) and colon carcinoma (H1D2), when genetically engineered to express such immune stimulatory cytokines as IFN-g and IL-18, induce strong anti-tumor immune response, in immunized tumor-free rats, whereas only a limited therapeutic effect is achieved in rats in which a tumor has already become established.
