  1. 6. End stage renal disease in type 1 diabetes : time trends and risk factors

    Författare :Cecilia Toppe; Anna Möllsten; Gisela Dahlquist; Torild Skrivarhaug; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; End stage renal disease; renal replacement therapy; type 1 diabetes; diabetes nephropathy; socioeconomy and epidemiology; epidemiologi; Epidemiology; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Sweden has a high incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the incidence is increasing worldwide. The incidence is now twice as high as when the registration of childhood onset T1D in Sweden started in 1977. One of the major risk factors for developing late complications such as renal failure (ESRD) is duration of T1D. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Conjugated linoleic acid and the metabolic syndrome : Clinical and metabolic studies with special reference to insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation

    Författare :Ulf Risérus; Keith Frayn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Metabolic syndrome; dietary fatty acids; conjugated linoleic acid; insulin resistance; oxidative stress; inflammation; cardiovascular disease; dyslipidemia; abdominal obesity; type 2 diabetes; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Nutrition; näringslära;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in middle-aged men with the metabolic syndrome, a high-risk group for type 2 diabetes. CLA is a group of fatty acid isomers with antiobesity and antidiabetogenic effects in animals, and CLA is therefore used as a supplement in humans. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Study of DNA methylation in human pancreatic islets

    Författare :Elin Hall; Diabetes - epigenetik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; type 2 diabetes; epigenetics; DNA mehtylation; human pancreatic islets; insulin secretion;

    Sammanfattning : Today type 2 diabetes is a common disease with a worldwide prevalence of 8.3%. The disease is characterised by hyperglycaemia which is a result of insufficient insulin secretion from the beta-cells in the pancreatic islets as well as an insulin resistance seen in the target tissues. 4. 9. Trends in obesity and type 2 diabetes : ethnic aspects and links to adipokines

    Författare :Mikael Lilja; Stefan Söderberg; Olov Rolandsson; Mats Eliasson; Kurt Svärdsudd; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Type 2 diabetes; leptin; adiponectin; obesity; abdominal obesity; epidemiology; ethnicity; fasting glucose; post-load glucose; Family Medicine; allmänmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Objective The prevalence of obesity and related diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing worldwide, and the Asian Indian population seems to be particularly susceptible to developing T2DM, even at a low body mass index (BMI). In Sweden, the age-adjusted prevalence of diabetes has not increased despite increasing self-reported obesity. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Control of metabolism and hormone secretion from pancreatic alpha and beta cells

    Författare :Jelena Stamenkovic; Diabetes - molekylär metabolism; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CLOCK genes; insulin; glucagon; metabolites; mitochondria; knock out;

    Sammanfattning : Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial disease, which has made it difficult to resolve its pathophysiology. We investigated processes that could contribute to the development of T2D. LÄS MER
