31. Studies of Budding Yeast Transcription Factors Acting Downstream of Nutrient Signaling Pathways
Sammanfattning : Being able to respond to extracellular cues such as nutrients and growth factors is of vital importance to all living cells. Pathways have therefore evolved which can sense the extracellular status, transmit a signal through the cell and affect gene expression, which ultimately enables adaptation. LÄS MER
32. Effects of Dopamine Signaling on Recovery and Inflammation after Ischemic Stroke
Sammanfattning : Ischemic stroke, resulting from occlusion of a brain artery is the most common type of stroke with a prevalence of 15 million people and the leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. Importantly, partial spontaneous recovery of lost neurological functions occurs mainly during the first months after stroke onset, albeit to a limited extent. LÄS MER
33. Effects of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease gene mutation on cell signaling
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the major neurodegenerative disorders affecting the elderly. The discovery of genes causing familial forms of these disorders has contributed enormously towards our understanding of underlying pathogenic mechanisms. LÄS MER
34. Effects of chemotherapy on bone growth and chondrocyte cell death signaling
Sammanfattning : Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used in both children and adults to treat common inflammatory diseases, including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. However, a multitude of undesired side effects have been reported in patients being treated with GCs, such as osteoporosis, obesity, metabolic disturbances, myopathy and decreased linear bone growth (in children). 35. Molecular studies of pancreatic cancer: Characterization of the transforming growth factor beta signaling pathway
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, genetic abnormalities in pancreatic cancer were studied, with special emphasis on alterations of components involved in the transforming growth factor beta (TGFB) signaling pathway. In the first study, fluorescence in situ hybridization and cytogenetic analyses revealed aberrations of chromosome 18 in all 13 pancreatic carcinoma cell lines studied, in particular frequent breaks close to the centromere of chromosome arm 18q.
