  1. 1. Phytobenthic communities in the Baltic Sea - seasonal patterns in settlement and succession

    Författare :Susanne Qvarfordt; Hans Kautsky; Lena Kautsky; Hendrik Schubert; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Succession; settlement; recruitment; phytobenthos; macroalgae; invertebrates; Baltic Sea; community; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seasonal changes in reproduction, recruitment, occurrence and growth of marine plant and animal species is a common phenomenon world-wide. This thesis investigates whether such seasonal changes could determine the succession in subtidal phytobenthic communities on free space in the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Ecology of zooplankton communities: climate, dormancy, and benthic-pelagic coupling

    Författare :Mikael Gyllström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; limnology; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; phytoplankton; temporal stability; recruitment; seasonal succession; environmental cues; diapause; shallow lakes; predation; enrichment; climate; temperature;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes how influences, such as top down and bottom up forces, shape zooplankton communities in shallow lakes. I have also extended the traditional food-web theory by investigating the effects of climate on total biomass, taxonomic composition, and temporal properties of zooplankton communities. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Bacterioplankton in the light of seasonality and environmental drivers

    Författare :Carina Bunse; Jarone Pinhassi; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine bacteria; marine microbiology; seasonal succession; ocean acidification; proteorhodopsin; photoheterotrophy; microbial time series; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Sammanfattning : Bacterioplankton are keystone organisms in marine ecosystems. They are important for element cycles, by transforming dissolved organic carbon and other nutrients. Bacterioplankton community composition and productivity rates change in surface waters over spatial and temporal scales. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Plant colonization of oak plantations - the interactive effects of local environment and land-use history

    Författare :Karin Valtinat; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nitrogen mineralization; Phosphorus; Plant ecology; Växtekologi; Soil acidity; Seed sowing; Dispersal limitation; Species diversity; Indicator species analysis; Functional groups; Succession; Understory vegetation; Land-use history; Temperate forest;

    Sammanfattning : In Europe, only small fragments of deciduous woodlands remain intact and species dependent on this ecosystem have declined. In southern Sweden, a shifting trend during the 20th century, with more afforestations on former arable land, resulted in new oak stands. These new stand are either on former arable fields or on continuously forested land. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Phytoplankton and Physical Disturbance : Seasonal dynamics in temperate Lake Erken, Sweden

    Författare :Yang Yang; Kurt Pettersson; Peeter Nõges; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phytoplankton dynamics; high-frequency measurements; thermal stratification; water column stability; equilibrium; disturbance;

    Sammanfattning : Phytoplankton mirrors changes in the environment and plays an important role in biogeochemical processes. Phytoplankton dynamics is the outcome of both autogenic succession and external disturbances. LÄS MER
