  1. 1. Carbon Balance Implications of Forest Biomass Production Potential

    Författare :Bishnu Chandra Poudel; Inga Carlman; Johan Bergh; Thomas Lundmark; Roger Sathre; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; forest management; silviculture; clear-cut forestry; continuous-cover forestry; substitution; total carbon; climate benefit; climate change; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Forests in boreal and temperate forest-ecosystems have importance for carbonbalance since they sequester large amount of atmospheric carbon by uptake ofcarbon-dioxide during photosynthesis, and transfer and store carbon in the forestecosystem. Forest material can be used for bio-fuel purposes and substitute fossilfuels, and supply wood products, which can replace carbon-and-energy-intensivematerials. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Characteristics of Vertical Forest Backscatter Profiles Measured using Radar Tomography

    Författare :Patrik Bennet; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Forest remote sensing; L-band; above-ground biomass; P-band; vertical reflectivity profiles; radar tomography; temporal backscatter variations;

    Sammanfattning : Forests are an integral part of the Earth’s climate system, having shaped the conditions of life throughout millions of years, but the coverage and conditions of forests are under rapid change. To monitor this change and predict the impact on climate, yearly global mapping of forest Above-Ground Biomass (AGB) is needed. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Fire history and tree population dynamics in Białowieża Forest, Poland and Belarus

    Författare :Ewa Zin; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Fire history and fire regime parameters in relation to the long-term tree population dynamics were studied with dendroecological methods across coniferous habitats of Białowieża Forest (E Poland and W Belarus), a semi-natural European temperate woodland ecosystem. In four different studies various aspects of fire dynamics were explored by using nearly 1500 tree ring samples of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Old-Growth Forests in the High Coast Region in Sweden and Active Management in Forest Set-Asides

    Författare :Jennie Sandström; Bengt-Gunnar Jonsson; Mattias Edman; Mikael Ohlson; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Coarse woody debris; Dead wood; Dendrochronology; Fire history; Forest conservation; Forest structure; Log; Meta-analysis; Pine heath forest; Prescribed burning; Saproxylic fungi; Saproxylic beetles; Snag; Wood-inhabiting fungi; Aktiv skötselmetod; Bevarandebiologi; Brandhistorik; Dendrokronologi; Död ved; Hällmarkstallskog; Lågproduktiv skog; Meta-analys; Naturvård; Naturvårdsbrand; Skogsstruktur; Solbelyst död ved; Stock; Torraka; Vedlevande svamp; Vedlevande insekter; Åldersstruktur;

    Sammanfattning : In today´s intensively managed landscape, very few forests with old-growth characteristics and little human impact exist. One of the rare exceptions is pine forests on rocky soils, a forest type which has probably escaped extensive human use because of its low productivity. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Phosphorus availability and microbial respiration across biomes : from plantation forest to tundra

    Författare :Camilla Esberg; Reiner Giesler; David A. Wardle; Bente J. Graae; Dan Binkley; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phosphorus availability; microbial bioassay; soil respiration; microbial growth rate; Hedley fractionation; soil sorption; weathered soils; boreal forest; subarctic and tundra;

    Sammanfattning : Phosphorus is the main limiting nutrient for plant growth in large areas of the world and the availability of phosphorus to plants and microbes can be strongly affected by soil properties. Even though the phosphorus cycle has been studied extensively, much remains unknown about the key processes governing phosphorus availability in different environments. LÄS MER
