  1. 1. Macroalgae in the Baltic Sea : responses to low salinity and nutrient enrichment in Ceramium and Fucus

    Författare :Lena Bergström; Lars Ericson; Lena Kautsky; Erik Bonsdorff; Christine A Maggs; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; adaptation; asexual reproduction; Baltic Sea; Gulf of Bothnia; salinity; macroalgae; nutrients; sexual reproduction; stress; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : The brackish Baltic Sea is a marginal environment for both marine and freshwater species. The rate of ecological differentiation is presumably high due to strong selection pressure from a gradient of decreasing salinity that has been present in its current state for only about 3 000 years. 2. 2. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes : regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem

    Författare :Gustaf Lilliesköld Sjöö; Max Troell; Nils Kautsky; Lena Kautsky; Alina Szmant; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral reefs; Nutrients; Herbivory; Ecological functions; East Africa; Regulating factors; Anthropogenic influence; Seaweed farming; Bioindicator; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces. 3. 3. Phytobenthic communities in the Baltic Sea - seasonal patterns in settlement and succession

    Författare :Susanne Qvarfordt; Hans Kautsky; Lena Kautsky; Hendrik Schubert; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Succession; settlement; recruitment; phytobenthos; macroalgae; invertebrates; Baltic Sea; community; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seasonal changes in reproduction, recruitment, occurrence and growth of marine plant and animal species is a common phenomenon world-wide. This thesis investigates whether such seasonal changes could determine the succession in subtidal phytobenthic communities on free space in the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Phytoplankton succession and algal nutrient kinetics in eutrophic brackish water environments

    Författare :Lena Tinnberg-Kautsky; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alger växter ;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis has been concerned with studying the effects of pollution on aquatic ecosystems with the main emphasis on investigating the phytoplankton succession in the brackish bay of Brunnsviken after sewage diversion.The causes of the observed changes have been investigated through enrichment experiments with phytoplankton in batch cultures and in studies of the nutrient uptake kinetics of Enteromorpha compressa. 5. 5. Element transport in aquatic ecosystems – Modelling general and element-specific mechanisms

    Författare :Lena Konovalenko; Clare Bradshaw; Ulrik Kautsky; Linda Kumblad; Dan Baird; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; radionuclides; elements; concentration ratio; bioaccumulation; biomagnification; fish; modelling; aquatic food web; ecosystem; Cs; Sr; environmental risk assessment; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Radionuclides are widely used in energy production and medical, military and industrial applications. Thus, understanding the behaviour of radionuclides which have been or may be released into ecosystems is important for human and environmental risk assessment. LÄS MER
