  1. 11. Evolving germs – Antibiotic resistance and natural selection in education and public communication

    Författare :Gustav Bohlin; Lena A. E. Tibell; Gunnar Höst; Jörg Zabel; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; natural selection; antibiotic resistance; visualizations; content analysis; threshold concepts; scientific literacy; media analysis;

    Sammanfattning : Bacterial resistance to antibiotics threatens modern healthcare on a global scale. Several actors in society, including the general public, must become more involved if this development is to be countered. The conveyance of relevant information provided through education and media reports is therefore of high concern. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Antibiotic Resistance in Wastewater : Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)and antibiotic resistance genes

    Författare :Stefan Börjesson; Per-Eric Lindgren; Johanna Ericson Sollid; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MRSA; SCCmec; spa typing; Staphylococcus aureus; methicillin; B-lactam; aminoglycoside; tetracycline; antibiotic; wastewater; wastewater treatment plant; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi;

    Sammanfattning : A large part of the antibiotics consumed ends up in wastewater, and in the wastewater the antibiotics may exert selective pressure for or maintain resistance among microorganisms. Antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes encoding antibiotic resistance are commonly detected in wastewater, often at higher rates and concentrations compared to surface water. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Antimicrobials in sewage treatment plants : occurrence, fate and resistance

    Författare :Marcus Östman; Mats Tysklind; Jerker Fick; Erik Björn; Klaus Kümmerer; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biocides; antibiotics; sewage treatment plants; wastewater; sludge; ozonation; activated carbon; antibiotic resistance; antimicrobials; mass flows; LC-MS MS; environment; advanced water treatment;

    Sammanfattning : The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified antibiotic resistance as a major threat to human health. The environment has been suggested to play an important role in the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. The external environment can act as a source of resistance genes that could potentially be transferred into human pathogens. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Clostridium difficile : epidemiology and antibiotic resistance

    Författare :Torbjörn Norén; Erik Bäck; Lars G. Burman; Roland Möllby; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Clostridium difficile; antibiotic resistance; epidemiology; Medicine; Medicin; Medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Clostridium difficile is a spore-forming toxin-producing intestinal bacterium abundant in soils and waters. This pathogen relies on increased growth by a disturbed intestinal microflora and the production of two cytotoxins, toxin A and toxin B, which may cause anything from mild self-limiting C. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Ecology and Evolution of Resistance to Herbivory : Trichome Production in Arabidopsis lyrata

    Författare :Geir Løe; Jon Ågren; Kari Lehtilä; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Plant-animal interactions; herbivory; trichomes; plant resistance; plant defense; divergent selection; local adaptation; GLABROUS1; evolution; matrix population models; LTRE; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I examine variation in occurrence and performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants of the perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. I combine field studies and genetic analysis to (1) examine the function of trichomes as a resistance character in natural populations, (2) compare the magnitude of population differentiation in trichome-production and at putatively neutral marker loci, (3) examine the molecular genetic basis of trichome-production, and (4) quantify the effects of herbivore removal on population growth and relative performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants.
