  1. 1. Context dependency of plant – animal interactions

    Författare :Malin A. E. König; Johan Ehrlén; Christer Wiklund; John Stinchcombe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Anthocharis cardamines; attack intensity; Cardamine pratensis; cytotype; herbivory; larval fitness; oviposition; phenology; plant-animal interactions; plant resistance; plant tolerance; polyploidy; spatial variation; trait variation; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The strength and direction of interactions between organisms vary spatially across the landscape. Traditionally, the focus has been on how trait variation affects the interactions between species. However, differences in abiotic and biotic environmental factors may also alter the distribution, phenology and behavior of the interacting species. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Ecology and Evolution of Resistance to Herbivory : Trichome Production in Arabidopsis lyrata

    Författare :Geir Løe; Jon Ågren; Kari Lehtilä; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Plant-animal interactions; herbivory; trichomes; plant resistance; plant defense; divergent selection; local adaptation; GLABROUS1; evolution; matrix population models; LTRE; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I examine variation in occurrence and performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants of the perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. I combine field studies and genetic analysis to (1) examine the function of trichomes as a resistance character in natural populations, (2) compare the magnitude of population differentiation in trichome-production and at putatively neutral marker loci, (3) examine the molecular genetic basis of trichome-production, and (4) quantify the effects of herbivore removal on population growth and relative performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants. 3. 3. Antibiotic Resistance in Wastewater : Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)and antibiotic resistance genes

    Författare :Stefan Börjesson; Per-Eric Lindgren; Johanna Ericson Sollid; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MRSA; SCCmec; spa typing; Staphylococcus aureus; methicillin; B-lactam; aminoglycoside; tetracycline; antibiotic; wastewater; wastewater treatment plant; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi;

    Sammanfattning : A large part of the antibiotics consumed ends up in wastewater, and in the wastewater the antibiotics may exert selective pressure for or maintain resistance among microorganisms. Antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes encoding antibiotic resistance are commonly detected in wastewater, often at higher rates and concentrations compared to surface water. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Resistance and recolonization of bryophyte assemblages following disturbances : - detecting patterns and exploring mechanisms

    Författare :Martin Schmalholz; Kristoffer Hylander; Jari Kouki; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bryophytes; boreal forest; boulders; clear-cutting; disturbance; establishment; insect outbreaks; microtopography; recolonization; resistance; spatial heterogeneity; succession; wildfires; Biology; Biologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Disturbances are ubiquitous features of most northern forest ecosystems. The subsequent response of plant assemblages on both short (resistance or not) and long term (recolonization or not) will depend on a number of factors operating at several spatial scales. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Setosphaeria turcica, fungal mating and plant defence

    Författare :Thomas Martin; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The heterothallic ascomycete Setosphaeria turcica (anamorph: Exserohlium turcicum) causes turcicum leaf blight on maize and sorghum. A survey was undertaken in Uganda to examine the sorghum – S. turcica interaction in terms of disease severity and incidence, overall fungal population structure, and new resistant resources. LÄS MER
