11. Interactions between calcium and heavy metals in Norway spruce : Accumulation and binding of metals in wood and bark
Sammanfattning : Waste products from the forest industry are to be spread in forests in Sweden to counteract nutrient depletion due to whole tree harvesting. This may increase the bioavailability of calcium (Ca) and heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in forest soils. LÄS MER
12. Remediation of materials with mixed contaminants : treatability, technology and final disposal
Sammanfattning : Contaminated soils are a large issue worldwide and much effort has been made to find efficient remediation methods. At many contaminated sites, mixtures of different contaminants with different properties are present, which may lead to additional problems, and thus additional costs, during the remediation process. 13. Interactions between metals and bacteria : Importance for metal speciation
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the interactions between metals and microorganisms with respect to* Toxicity of metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Zn)* Mineralization of metal-organic complexes (citric acid, histidine)* Metal adsorption (Cs, Sr, Eu, Hg, Zn, As)Most of the studies were made on the gram-negative bacterium Klebsiella oxytoca, but the work also involved a Serratia as as well as mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil systems. Most previous studies, reported in the literature, on the toxic effects of metals on microorganisms have been performed at high nutrient levels, despite the fact that microorganisms in nature normally live under energy-limited conditions. 14. Design, Development and Applications of Highly Sensitive Protein-Based Capacitive Biosensors
Sammanfattning : Highly sensitive biosensors were developed for environmental and medical applications. The biosensors were based on bioengineered proteins as biorecognition elements coupled to a highly sensitive capacitive transducer. LÄS MER
15. Corrosion-included metal runoff from external constructions and its environmental interaction : a combined field and laboratory investigation of Zn, Cu, Cr and Ni for risk assessment
Sammanfattning : The 1990s has seen an increased awareness of possible environmental effects of corrosion-induced metal release from outdoor constructions. Considerable efforts have been initiated to perform critical assessments of possible risks of selected metals. Gaps of knowledge have been identified and research investigations started. LÄS MER
