1. Sources of dioxins and other POPs to the marine environment : Identification and apportionment using pattern analysis and receptor modeling
Sammanfattning : In the studies underlying this thesis, various source tracing techniques were applied to environmental samples from the Baltic region. Comprehensive sampling and analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in surface sediments in Swedish coastal and offshore areas resulted in a unique data set for this region. 2. Thermal formation and chlorination of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds
Sammanfattning : This thesis contributes to an increased understanding of the formation of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in combustion processes. Although emissions to air from waste incineration facilities have been greatly reduced by the use of efficient air pollution control measures, the resulting residues (ashes and filters) are highly toxic and are classified as hazardous waste. 3. Synthesis and Rearrangement of Epoxy Sugars
Sammanfattning : Ring-Contraction of sugar-derived epoxy alcohols, functionalised in position 1 and 6, by treatment with lithium bromide and N, N, N', N'-tetramethylurea in refluxing toluene gave enantiomerically pure a,b-unsaturated aldehydes of furanosides. O-Glycosidic epoxy alcohols gave only one, easily purified, aldehyde in approximately 30-60% yield depending on the substitution pattern. LÄS MER
4. The Synthesis and Use of Certain Pyridine Derivatives as Modulators of the G-protein Coupled Receptors mGlu5 and P2Y12
Sammanfattning : The glutamatergic mGlu5 receptor and the purinergic P2Y12 receptor are two important targets in the development of novel treatments of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and thrombosis, respectively. Synthesis was developed to investigate the structure-activity relationships (SAR) of a novel series of 2-alkynylpyridine derivatives as mGluR5 antagonists. LÄS MER
5. A beta-phosphoglucomutase in carbohydrate metabolism of Lactococcus lactis
Sammanfattning : Phosphoglucomutase (PGM) catalyzes the reversible conversion of glucose 1-phosphate to glucose 6-phosphate. Two distinct forms of PGM have been purifed and charactierized in Lactococcus lactis growing on maltose: one specific for the alpha-isomer, and the other specific for the beta-isomer of glucose 1-phosphate.
