  1. 11. Round goby invasion of the Baltic Sea : the role of phenotypic variation

    Författare :Magnus Thorlacius; Tomas Brodin; Göran Englund; Jost Borcherding; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Round goby Neogobius melanostomus ; behaviour; animal personality; dispersal; species invasions; colonisation; spread; sociability; activity; boldness; aggression; cortisol coping-styles; biology; biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Biological invasions are a major threat to biodiversity world wide with annual economic costs up to 1.4 trillion dollars. The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) is a particularly fierce invader that threatens ecological function of the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Marine Seaweed Invasions : the Ecology of Introduced Fucus evanescens

    Författare :Sofia A. Wikström; Lena Kautsky; Ove Eriksson; Paul Lavery; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biological invasions; marine; seaweed; algae; herbivory; enemy release hypothesis; phlorotannins; anti-fouling; Fucus evanescens; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Biological invasions are an important issue of global change and an increased understanding of invasion processes is of crucial importance for both conservation managers and international trade. In this thesis, I have studied the invasion of the brown seaweed Fucus evanescens, to investigate the fate and effect of a perennial, habitat-forming seaweed introduced to a coastal ecosystem. 3. 13. Neutrophils versus Pathogenic Fungi : through the magnifying glass of nutritional immunity

    Författare :Maria Joanna Niemiec; Constantin F. Urban; Bernhard Hube; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophils; Candida albicans; nutritional immunity; metallome; Zn; Fe;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrophils are among the first white blood cells recruited to the site of infection once microbial pathogens enter the host organism. At site, they perform a well-orchestrated chain of processes that aims to kill the microbial invader. Most prominent, neutrophils engulf microbes to inactivate them intracellularly, a process called phagocytosis. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Effects of size-dependent predation and competition on population and community dynamics

    Författare :Karin Nilsson; Lennart Persson; Volker Rudolf; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :size-structure; cannibalism; resource competition; predation; emergent facilitation; population regulation; population dynamics; overcompensation; density-dependence; cycles; zooekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Most animals grow substantially during their lifetime and change in competitive ability, predatory capacity and their susceptibility to predation as they grow. This thesis addresses the implications of this on regulation and dynamics within populations as well as between population interactions. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Studies of Baltic Sea plankton - spatial and temporal patterns

    Författare :Helena Höglander; Ulf Larsson; Christoph Humborg; Anna-Stiina Heiskanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phytoplankton; Vertical distribution; Sedimentation; Baltic Sea; Cyanobacteria; Stable istopes; Cercopagis pengoi; Zooplankton; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the spatial and temporal patterns of Baltic Sea phyto- and zooplankton. Studies of such patterns are important to gain a better understanding of the offshore nutrient dynamics of the Baltic Sea (Papers I and II) and how to manage eutrophication and invasive species in coastal areas (Papers III and IV).
