  1. 1. Evolutionary ecology of arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) : Intra- and interspecific interactions in circumpolar populations

    Författare :Johan Hammar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Arctic char; Salvelinus alpinus; biogeography; niche; life history; population ecology; intra- and interspecific interactions; cannibalism; competition; landlocked; marginal populations; species border; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines a suite of ecological and genetic mechanisms influencing the fundamental and realized niche borders of European and North American populations of the Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) species complex in allopatry as well as in sympatry with brown trout (Salmo trutta) or brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). 2. 2. Intraspecific diversity of pike (Esox lucius) in the Baltic Sea and new insights on thermoregulation in fish

    Författare :Oscar Nordahl; Per Larsson; Anders Forsman; Juha Merilä; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; adaptive divergence; Cyprinus carpio; ecology; Esox lucius; evolution; local adaptation; management; thermoregulation; sun-basking; vertical migration; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Evolutionary Biology; Evolutionsbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Fish display a fascinating variation in behavior, morphology and physiology among species, among individuals within species, and within individuals over time. A central quest in ecology and evolution is to understand causes and consequences of such variation. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Social below ground : Life-history and gut microbiome of Damaraland mole-rats

    Författare :Hanna Bensch; Markus Zöttl; Jonas Waldenström; Daniel Lundin; Sarah Knowles; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolutionary Biology; Evolutionsbiologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Studying the consequences of variation in individual life-histories is vital for our understanding of the evolution of animal societies. In this thesis, I study the ecology and consequences of group living on growth, survival, reproduction, and the gut microbiome of the Damaraland mole-rat (Fukomys damarensis), a subterranean cooperatively breeding mammal. 4. 4. Evolutionary Ecology of Floral Traits in Fragrant Orchids

    Författare :Elodie Chapurlat; Nina Sletvold; Jon Ågren; Magne Friberg; Kathleen Kay; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; agents of selection; diurnal and nocturnal pollination; divergent selection; field experiment; floral evolution; floral scent; Gymnadenia conopsea; Gymnadenia densiflora; Orchidaceae; phenotypic selection; pollinator-mediated selection; spatial variation; scent rhythm;

    Sammanfattning : Why are flowers so diverse? Much of floral evolution is thought to be driven by pollinator-mediated selection. However, the connection between macroevolutionary patterns of floral diversity and microevolutionary processes remains poorly understood. In this thesis, I have used the fragrant orchids Gymnadenia conopsea s.s. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Effects of Environmental Factors on maternal Choice and Gene Dispersal in Plants

    Författare :Teklehaimanot Haileselassie; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; siring ability; Maternal effect; genetically modified crops; risk assessment; morphological markers; herbivory; Cucumis sativus; Växtekologi; pollen tube growth rate; Plant ecology; Nicotiana alata;

    Sammanfattning : Gene dispersal through pollen is affected by both abiotic and biotic environmental factors. In this study, I mainly investigated the effect of environmental factors: nutrient availability, simulated herbivory and floral morphology (flower colour), on the siring success of competing pollen donors and fitness of the resulting offspring.
