  1. 1. Competition in caddis larvae

    Författare :Göran Englund; S. Kohler; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Agrypnia pagetana; Arctopsyche ladogensis; emigration; fighting behaviour; habitat selection; Hydropsyche siltalai; Hydropsychidae; immigration; predation; resource competition; sequential assessment game;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with behavioural strategies used by caddis larvae in pairwise contests and when selecting microhabitats. Effects of caddis larvae on survival and habitat selection of other insect taxa have also been studied. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Anthropogenic 129I Traced in Environmental Archives by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

    Författare :Edvard Englund; Göran Possnert; Ala Aldahan; José María López-Gutiérrez; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Engineering physics; iodine-129; sediment; aerosol; reprocessing; Chernobyl; nuclear weapon; Sellafield; La Hague; accelerator mass spectrometry; AMS; Teknisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : Since the beginning of the nuclear era, starting during the 1940s, large amount of radioactivity has been released into the environment. This thesis deals with the temporal and spatial distribution of the anthropogenic radioisotope 129I (T1/2= 15.7 Myr) in northern Europe. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Spatial heterogeneity and biotic interactions : scaling from experiments to natural systems

    Författare :Ulf Bergström; Göran Englund; Erik Bonsdorff; Sebastian Diehl; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; zooekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Much of current ecological theory stems from experimental studies. These studies have often been conducted in closed systems, at spatial scales that are much smaller than the systems of interest. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Fågel, fisk eller förundran? : En studie av förhållningssätt i existentiella frågor, baserad på uppsatser skrivna på ett mångkulturellt vuxengymnasium

    Författare :Tove Frisch; Boel Englund; Claes-Göran Wenestam; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Philosophy of life; God; meaning of life; death; contradiction; existentialism; determinism; reason; emotion; intuition; change; activity; passivity; society; culture; identity; religion; language; freedom; facticity; Sartre; Education; Pedagogik;

    Sammanfattning : Fågel, fisk eller förundran? A study of existential attitudes based on essays written in a multicultural upper secondary school for adults The aim of this study is to survey and interpret outlooks on life as expressed in 175 essays written (1999-2001) in a multicultural Swedish suburb by adult students learning Swedish, Swedish as a Foreign Language, and Philosophy. What are the recurring themes in these essays? How do they reflect the fundamental existential problems of their authors? The theoretical background rests on existential hermeneutics with Sartre (1943, 1946, 1984) as the most important philosophical source. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Biotic resistance in freshwater fish communities

    Författare :Anna Henriksson; Göran Englund; David Wardle A.; Jun Yu; Sebastian Diehl; Donald Jackson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biotic resistance; freshwater fish; introductions; invasions; invasion success; invasibility; invasiveness; species richness; saturation; species identity; weighted species richness;

    Sammanfattning : Invasions of non-native species cause problems in ecosystems worldwide, and despite the extensive effort that has been put into research about invasions, we still lack a good understanding for why some, but not other, communities resist these invasions. In this doctoral thesis I test hypotheses on biotic resistance using a large dataset of more than 1000 both failed and successful introductions of freshwater fish into Swedish lakes. LÄS MER
