  1. 6. Gas-Phase Protein Structure Under the Computational Microscope : Hydration, Titration, and Temperature

    Författare :Erik Marklund; David van der Spoel; Albert Heck; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular dynamics; gas phase; proteins; micelles; proton transfer; Grothuss mechanism; kinetics; Physics; Fysik; Physics with specialization in Biophysics; Fysik med inriktning mot biofysik;

    Sammanfattning : Although the native environment of the vast majority of proteins is a complex aqueous solution, like the interior of a cell, many analysis methods for assessing chemical and physical properties of biomolecules require the sample to be aerosolized; that is, transferred to the gas-phase. An important example is electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry, which can provide a wide range of information about e. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy Studies at the Air-Liquid Interface

    Författare :Eric Tyrode; Mark Rutland; Paul Davies; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sum Frequency Generation; SFG; VSFS; surfactant; adsorption; water; surface structure; hydration; surface tension; fluorosurfactants; liquid-air interface; poly ethylene oxide surfactants; surface molecular orientation; acetic acid.; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis the structure and hydration of small organic and amphipilic compounds adsorbed at the air-liquid interface, have been studied using the nonlinear optical technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS). The second order nature of the sum frequency process makes this technique particularly surface sensitive and very suitable for interfacial studies, as molecules at the surface can be distinguished even in the presence of a vast excess of the same molecules in the bulk. 3. 8. Environmentally Responsive Surface Coatings of Polyion-Surfactant Ion Complex Salts

    Författare :Charlotte Gustavsson; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polymer; polyelectrolyte; surfactant; complex salt; surface coatings; phase behaviour; responsivness; hydration; SAXS; water-insoluble; solutes; liquid crystalline structures;

    Sammanfattning : Complexes formed between oppositely charged polyions and surfactant ions are known to have very rich phase behaviour in bulk solution. The work in this thesis investigates the possibilites of using such complexes as surface coatings. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Cracking in Reinforced Concrete Structures Due to Imposed Deformations

    Författare :Agnes Nagy; Avdelningen för Konstruktionsteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; minimum reinforcement; cracking; softening; shrinkage; cooling; imposed deformations; conversion formula; static E-modulus; damping coefficient; resonance frequency; dynamic E-modulus; constitutive model; thermal stress; hydration process; reinforced concrete structure; early age; crack control; Building construction; Byggnadsteknik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is concerned with modeling of the cracking process in reinforced concrete due to imposed deformations. Cracking is investigated both at early ages, during hydration, and at mature age when the final properties of the concrete are reached. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Effect of water on the glass transition and properties of solid-state pharmaceutical formulations

    Författare :Ekaterina Bogdanova; Vitaly Kocherbitov; Thomas Rades; Malmö universitet; []
    Nyckelord :glass transition; glass transition temperature; relaxation; sucrose; trehalose; maltodextrin; lysozyme; unfolding; hydration; solid-stae; sorption calorimetry; Health and society; Hälsa och samhälle;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to increase our knowledge of the glassy state and the glass transition phenomenon and to evaluate the effect of water on the glassy state. To accomplish this, investigations were focused on the amorphous sucrose-water (paper I, II, III), trehalose-water (paper I), maltodextrin-water (paper I), and lysozyme-sucrose-water (paper IV) systems.
