    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to analyze the genetic and epigenetic characteristics of pediatric high hyperdiploid acute lymphoblastic leukemia (HeH ALL), the most common type of childhood malignancy. The three original articles presented in this thesis have addressed three major questions regarding HeH ALL: what are the genetic characteristics of the most common structural abnormality – dup(1q)? Are aberrant methylation patterns involved in leukemogenesis? How do diagnostic and relapse samples relate to each other genetically? In article I we found that the proximal breakpoints of dup(1q)-positive Burkitt lymphomas (BL) and pediatric HeH ALLs cluster close to the centromere, suggesting this region to be breakprone, and that five genes on 1q were significantly overexpressed and thus potentially pathogenetically important. 3. 3. Characterisation of chromosomal aberrations in childhood leukaemia

    Författare :Ann Nordgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Chromosome aberrations; SKY; interphase-FISH; Childhood ALL;

    Sammanfattning : Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in childhood, accounting for approximately 25% of all paediatric malignancies. Based on clinical risk criteria and modem laboratory investigations including immunophenotyping, cytogenetics, and molecular genetics, patients can be divided into prognostic groups and assigned to risk- adjusted treatment protocols. Sammanfattning : Background: In childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the cure rate has now reached 80% in the western world. Even so, 15¬–20% will die from the disease or treatment-related causes, among them children who did not present any known unfavorable features at diagnosis. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Genetic changes in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and other lymphoid malignancies

    Författare :Teresa Calero Moreno; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Malignant transformation of normal cells is the result of defects in cell growth control, differentiation and programmed cell death. It has been convincingly shown that malignant cells carry mutations in the genes controlling these cellular processes. LÄS MER
