1. Characterisation of chromosomal aberrations in childhood leukaemia
Sammanfattning : Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in childhood, accounting for approximately 25% of all paediatric malignancies. Based on clinical risk criteria and modem laboratory investigations including immunophenotyping, cytogenetics, and molecular genetics, patients can be divided into prognostic groups and assigned to risk- adjusted treatment protocols. 2. Fine needle aspiration cytology in diagnosis and management of childhood small round cell tumours
Sammanfattning : Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is accepted for diagnosing malignant tumours in adults. However, it has been slow in gaining acceptance among paediatricians and has only been used at some centres in the routine diagnosis of childhood tumours. LÄS MER
3. Molecular genetics of lymphoid malignancies
Sammanfattning : Advances in molecular genetics during the last decade has made it possible to identify genetic lesions in malignant cells that are specific for disease entities with a common clinical presentation and prognosis. In chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) deletions in 13ql4 are the most frequently occurring abnormalities and deletions cluster around marker D13S319 suggesting that a tumor suppressor gene is located in this region. 4. Clinical prognostic markers in chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Sammanfattning : Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is characterized by the accumulation of mature B lymphocytes in blood, bone marrow and lymphoid tissues. The clinical course for the individual patient is still unpredictable despite decades of research on prognostic markers and staging systems. LÄS MER
5. Molecular markers reflecting malignant transformation and tumor progression
Sammanfattning : The early detection of neoplastic lesions is most critical in the successful treatment of malignant disease. This thesis investigates molecular targets for an improved detection and diagnosis of cancer by exploring the value of interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to detect specific chromosomal aneuploidies and gene amplifications, and laminin-5 gamma2 chain expression detected by immunohistochemistry as a marker for invasiveness.
