16. Islet xenograft rejection : studies in the pig-to-rodents and pig-to-primate models
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis was: 1) to compare islet allo- and xenograft rejection in rats, using immunosuppression with CsA in a mixed allogeneic-xenogeneic islet transplantation model, 2) to evaluate the efficacy of various immunosuppressive drugs, with special reference to Leflunomide, in preventing islet xenograft rejection in the pig-to-rat model, 3) to perform an immunohistochemical study of porcine islet xenograft rejection in primates including primates treated with CsA+DSG, and 4) to study the metabolism and excretion of porcine C-peptide in mice, with special reference to the use of donor-specific C-peptide for monitoring islet xenograft function. In summary, the results were as follows: 1. LÄS MER
17. Costimulation Blockade in Experimental Transplantation
Sammanfattning : Transplantation is the only cure for end-stage organ failure. With the transplantation follows the need for continuous treatment with immunosuppressive agents for as long as the graft functions, which entails major side effects. Less toxic treatments are therefore in great demand. Preferably, the treatment should also be limited in time. LÄS MER
18. Corneal transplant outcome- a Swedish register
Sammanfattning : Aim. The aim of this study was to present different aspects of the outcome after corneal transplantation based on data from the Swedish Cornea Register. Papers. The first paper describes the register and gives descriptive statistics and analysis of data from a two-year follow up, while the last paper presents data from a ten-year follow up. LÄS MER
19. The clinical importance of anti-endothelial cell antibodies in chronic kidney dysfunction and organ transplantation
Sammanfattning : The endothelium is the thin layer of cells that lines the interior surface of blood vessels and is the first site of contact between immune cells and tissues. Therefore, alterations at the level of the endothelium are crucial to understand the nature of vascular diseases and organ damage. LÄS MER
20. In vitro models of xenograft rejection : studies on leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions
Sammanfattning : Xenotransplantation is the transplantation of cells, tissues or organs between different species and is a potential alternative to allotransplantation because of the lack of human donors. The pig is believed to be a suitable donor-species to man for medical, technical, financial and ethical reasons. LÄS MER
