1. Induction of operational tolerance to allografts and xenografts
Sammanfattning : Inhibition of the costimulatory molecules B7 and CD40L with CTLA4Ig and anti-CD40L administered only during the first week after transplantation induces indefinite survival of allo- and xenogeneic heart transplants and significantly prolongs skin grafts in C3H mice. However, this treatment protocol is not as effective in C57BL/6 mice which reject skin transplants with nearly the same median survival time as untreated controls. LÄS MER
2. Costimulation Blockade in Experimental Transplantation
Sammanfattning : Transplantation is the only cure for end-stage organ failure. With the transplantation follows the need for continuous treatment with immunosuppressive agents for as long as the graft functions, which entails major side effects. Less toxic treatments are therefore in great demand. Preferably, the treatment should also be limited in time. LÄS MER
3. Cell transplantation with human mesenchymal or embryonic stem cells to the heart : experimental, molecular, immunological and echocardiographic studies
Sammanfattning : Background: Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC), human embryonic stem cells (HESC) and human fetal cardiomyocyte progenitor cells (HFCP) all represent possible candidate cells for regeneration of damaged myocardium. Although they represent cell types with many positive attributes, their capacity to engraft, to differentiate into mature cardiomyocytes, to improve myocardial function and their immunological properties are the focus of these studies. 4. Immunosuppresive properties of new potential drugs in transplantation
Sammanfattning : Transplantation of vital organs is today a widely used treatment when failure of the organ is a fact. To prevent rejection immunosuppresive treatment must be maintained lifelong, unless transplantation is perfomed between identical twins. LÄS MER
5. On the induction and function of Foxp3+ regulatory T cells
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on three original papers with the overall aim to study the mechanisms of induction and function of Foxp3+CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells. Regulatory T cells induce down-modulation of costimulatory molecules CD80 and CD86 on dendritic cells in vitro. LÄS MER
