  1. 1. Fishing the gene pool : Genetic structure, admixture and behavioural complexity in fisheries management

    Författare :Kim H. Berndt; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fisheries management; Fishery stock; Stock discrimination; Genetic structure; Genetic admixture; Admixture zone; Stock substructure; Phenotypic divergence; Gadus morhua; Salmo trutta;

    Sammanfattning : Prudent management of marine fish resources relies on separation and management of biologically meaningful groups of conspecifics, termed fishery stocks, often depicted as self-sustaining, spatiotemporally separated and demographically independent entities. Such stock discrimination has however proven challenging. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Population genetic history and patterns of admixture : Examples from northeastern and southern Africa

    Författare :Nina Hollfelder; Mattias Jakobsson; Michele Ramsay; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; population structure; genetic admixture; genomic variation; Africa; population genomics; lactase persistence; sex-biased admixture; human evolutionary genetics; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Organismal Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär organismbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The origin of humans lies in Africa, as has been shown by archaeology, paleontology and genetics. Here, we can find the largest genetic diversity and the deepest split among human populations. African genetic diversity has been shaped by a long and complex history. LÄS MER

  3. 3. From the migrations of herders and farmers to the colonial era and the modern-day : Genetic inferences on African demographic history

    Författare :Rickard Hammarén; Mattias Jakobsson; Carina Schlebusch; Torsten Günther; Luca Pagani; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; admixture; African demography; human evolutionary genetics; population structure; sex-biased admixture; Africa; population genetics; Biology with Specialisation in Human Evolution and Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot människans evolution och genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Africa is the birthplace of the human species and home to great linguistic, cultural, and genetic diversity. Despite this, the genetics of the peoples of the continent remains understudied. In this thesis, I apply population genetic approaches, to contribute to the knowledge of human demographic history in Africa. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Population size, viability and genetic diversity in the orchid Gymnadenia conopsea

    Författare :Linus Söderquist; Nina Sletvold; Sophie Karrenberg; Hans Jacquemyn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; demography; extinction probability; genetic diversity; genetic rescue; genetic structure; Gymnadenia conopsea; orchid conservation; population viability; population size; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined controlled crosses with genetic and demographic data to examine how a main conservation value indicator, population size, was associated with estimates of population viability. I focused on the still common, but decreasing, perennial orchid Gymnadenia conopsea at two spatial scales—locally on the island Öland, in SE Sweden, and regionally across Scandinavia. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Ecological drivers and genetic signatures of evolutionary divergence and local adaptation in pike (Esox lucius)

    Författare :Johanna Sunde; Anders Forsman; Anssi Laurila; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; adaptation; differentiation; Esox lucius; evolution; gene flow; genetic admixture; genetic structure; microsatellites; pike; RADseq; salinity tolerance; temperature tolerance; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The diversity among species, populations, and individuals in nature is astonishing. Genetic and phenotypic variation constitutes the raw material for evolution. It influences how populations respond to changing environments, and can impact long-term survival of species and ecosystem functioning. LÄS MER
