6. Genetic regulation of nerve injury-induced neurodegeneration and inflammation
Sammanfattning : Neurodegeneration and inflammation in the central nervous system (CNS) are hallmarks of several neurological disorders, including multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. The susceptibility of an individual to these conditions is complex, i.e. influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. LÄS MER
7. Genetic dissection of multifactorial disease models in the rat
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is characterized by two apparently distinct pathophysiologic defects - insulin resistance and a failure of the pancreatic Beta-cells to compensate for this resistance by appropriately increasing insulin secretion. There is strong evidence for an important role of genetics in both of these components. LÄS MER
8. Island biogeography and population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard
Sammanfattning : Islands are cradles for new biodiversity and provide natural laboratories for the study of population divergence. In my thesis, I investigated the role of different evolutionary processes in the population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard (Podarcis gaigeae), a species where islet populations have strongly diverged morphologies. 9. Prediction of 3D structures of oligosaccharides. Methodological development and studies on saccharide antigens of interest for vaccine design
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents 3D structure predictions of five immunologically active surfacepolysaccharides of pathogens, which are of interest as targets for development of glycoconjugatevaccines. Furthermore it describes two methods which have been used for theconformational predictionsThe Shigella dysenteriae type 2 Oantigenwas predicted to form a compact helicalstructure with three repeating pentasaccharide units per turn. 10. Genetic Analysis of Fat Metabolism in Domestic Pigs and their Wild Ancestor
Sammanfattning : The domestication of the pig began about 9 000 years ago and many of the existing domestic breeds have been selected for phenotypic traits like lean meat and fast growth. Domestic pigs are phenotypically very different from the ancestral wild boar that has adapted to survive in their natural environment. LÄS MER
