  1. 16. The acquisition of contrast : a longitudinal investigation of initial s+plosive cluster development in Swedish children

    Författare :Fredrik Karlsson; Kirk P. H. Sullivan; Peter E. Czigler; Marilyn M. Vihman; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; phonological contrast; speech development; place and manner of articulation; aspiration; structural complexity; acoustic cues; homonym production; Phonetics; Fonetik;

    Sammanfattning : This Thesis explores the development of word-initial s+plosive consonant clusters in the speech of Swedish children between the ages of 1;6 and 4;6. Development in the word-initial consonant clusters is viewed as being determined by 1) the children’s ability to articulate the target sequence of consonants, 2) the level of understanding of which acoustic features in the adult model production are significant for the signalling of the intended distinction, and 3) the children’s ability to apply established production patterns only to productions where the acquired feature agrees with the adult target, to achieve a contrast between rival output forms. 2. 17. Perception, Analysis and Synthesis of Speaker Age

    Författare :Susanne Schötz; Fonetik; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; phonology; perceptual cues; speaker age; automatic speaker recognition; acoustic analysis; acoustic correlates; data-driven; Phonetics; formant synthesis; Fonetik; fonologi; Technological sciences; Teknik;

    Sammanfattning : Speaker age is an important paralinguistic feature in speech which has to be considered in the study of phonetic variation. Knowledge about this feature may be used to improve speech technology applications, e.g. automatic speech recognition and speech synthesis. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Phonological Quantity in Swedish Dialects : Typological Aspects, Phonetic Variation and Diachronic Change

    Författare :Felix Schaeffler; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Swedish dialects; phonological quantity; vowel and consonant duration; cluster analysis; linguistic typology; phonetic variation; diachronic change; Phonetics; Fonetik;

    Sammanfattning : This study investigates the realisation of phonological quantity in the dialects of Modern Swedish, based on a corpus containing recordings from 86 locations in Sweden and the Swedishspeaking parts of Finland. The corpus was recorded as part of the national SweDia project.The study is explorative in character. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Voice Imitation : A Phonetic Study of Perceptual Illusions and Acoustic Success

    Författare :Elisabeth Zetterholm; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; impersonation; Voice and speech imitation; target voice; individual voice; pitch register; voice quality; prosody; semantic information; phonology; dialect; articulatory timing; speech style; Phonetics; Fonetik; fonologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is about voice imitations, more specifically impersonation. Questions are raised about the uniqueness of a person’s voice and speech behaviour and if it is possible to get close to another speaker’s voice and speech. Four main research questions are investigated in different studies. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Prosodic Phrasing in Spontaneous Swedish

    Författare :Petra Hansson; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; intonation.; spontaneous speech; optimality theory; prominence; grouping; phrasing; Southern Swedish; Swedish; speech planning; speech production; speech perception; prosody; phonology; phonetics; Fonetik; fonologi;

    Sammanfattning : One of the most important functions of prosody is to divide the flow of speech into chunks. The chunking, or prosodic phrasing, of speech plays an important role in both the production and perception of speech. LÄS MER
