Sammanfattning : The novel El obsceno påjaro de la noche ( The Obscene Bird of Night) (1970) by José Donoso is considered to be essentially governed by two semantic isotopies: the Enclosure and the Substitution. The Substitution is a consequence of the Enclosure, which is manifested as a reaction to the inhibitive effect of the Enclosure; in this way the polarity between these two governing isotopies generates a dynamic which permits both the development of the story and its interpretative coherence.
