16. Statistical and machine learning methods to analyze large-scale mass spectrometry data
Sammanfattning : As in many other fields, biology is faced with enormous amounts ofdata that contains valuable information that is yet to be extracted. The field of proteomics, the study of proteins, has the luxury of having large repositories containing data from tandem mass-spectrometry experiments, readily accessible for everyone who is interested. 17. Modeling of a Free Piston Energy Converter
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACTThe Free Piston Energy Converter (FPEC) is a new type of automotive prime mover, offering high efficiency in conjunction with low emissions. The FPEC essentially consists of two opposing cylinders with a linear alternator incorporated in-between that produces electric power directly. LÄS MER
18. Susceptibility Genes in Alzheimer’s Disease: Associations and Mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, followed by frontotemporal dementia (FTD), in the elderly. It is a genetically heterogeneous disease characterized by progressive cognitive decline and memory impairment. LÄS MER
19. Complex Trait Genetics : Beyond Additivity
Sammanfattning : The link between the genotype and the phenotype of an organism is immensely complex. Despite this it can, to a great extent, be captured using models that assume that gene variants combine their effects in an additive manner. This thesis explores aspects of genetics that cannot be fully captured using such additive models. LÄS MER
20. Genetic studies on cardiovascular disease - identification of novel drug targets
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to identify novel potential drug targets of cardiovascular disease with a focus on G-protein coupled receptors. We identified a common genetic variant of the ATP receptor P2Y11, where an alanine is substituted with a threonine at position 87 of the P2Y11 receptor that increases the risk of developing acute myocardial infarction.
