1. Regeneration in the adult brain after focal cerebral ischemia : exploration of neurogenesis and angiogenesis
Sammanfattning : Background: Ischemic stroke ranks as the third major cause of clinical mortality and the leading cause of handicap in adults. Each year, stroke occurs in about 30,000 Swedes. The severity of an acute ischemic stroke depends mainly on the degree and duration of local cerebral blood flow (lCBF) reduction. LÄS MER
2. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 3. Skull base meningioma : Surgical and adjuvant treatment with clinical and PET evaluation
Sammanfattning : The treatment strategy for skull base meningiomas remains a controversial issue. Because of the proximity of these tumours to critical neurovascular structures, the risk for vascular damage and new cranial neuropathies postoperatively is significant. LÄS MER
4. Adult Stem Cell Plasticity, Hype or Hope?
Sammanfattning : Several studies have reported that bone marrow (BM)-derived stem cells have the capacity to give rise to cells of different type of tissue; an ability termed stem cell plasticity or transdifferentiation. Controversies exist as to how frequent this phenomenon is, or if it may be explained by alternative mechanisms. LÄS MER
5. Validation of Several Nucleoside Tracers as Proliferation Markers
Sammanfattning : Positron emission tomography (PET) is a powerful method for in vivo characterization of tumor biochemistry and clinically has been used for diagnosing and grading of malignancy. A key element in oncology is proliferation potential, a feature that is assumed to be an important indicator of tumor growth. LÄS MER
