  1. 1. Future stratospheric ozone depletion will affect a subarctic dwarf shrub ecosystem

    Författare :Ulf Johanson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vaccinium; UVB; subarctic; shoot growth; ozone depletion; leaf thickness; irradiation system; heath ecosystem; Empetrum; dwarf shrubs; Calamagrostis; decomposition; Physiological biophysics; Växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The stratospheric ozone depletion and the concomitant increase in ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-320 nm) radiation is of global concern due to the effects of UV-B on living organisms. To investigate the effects of increased levels of UV-B, a field irradiation system was established at a subarctic dwarf shrub heath in Northern Sweden (68 °N). LÄS MER

  2. 2. Probiotics and berry-associated polyphenols: catabolism and antioxidative effects

    Författare :Maja Jakesevic; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bilberry; Rosehips; Chokeberry; Probiotics; Lactic acid bacteria; Polyphenols; Ischemia-reperfusion; Oxidative stress;

    Sammanfattning : Oxidative stress can cause damage to DNA, proteins and lipids and is associated with inflammation and various human diseases as cancer, atherosclerosis, and autoimmune diseases. Polyphenol-rich diet, such as fruits and berries, may act as antioxidants and prevent oxidative stress and, thereby, associated diseases. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Berries in Prevention of Metabolic Disease – focus on obesity, diabetes and gut microbiota

    Författare :Lovisa Heyman; Molekylär nutrition; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; obesity; type 2 diabetes; berries; low-grade inflammation; gut microbiota; hepatic steatosis; gene expression; DNA methylation; lingonberry; blackcurrant; bilberry; açai;

    Sammanfattning : The increasing prevalence of obesity is a worldwide health problem closely linked to diet and lifestyle factors. Obesity is associated with increased risk of several metabolic disorders including insulin resistance, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Effects of Probiotics and Plant Components on Murine Experimental Colitis and Acute Liver Failure

    Författare :Nadia Osman; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; bacteriology; virology; Rose hip; Microbiology; Probiotics; Prebiotics; Liver injury; Blueberry; Gastro-enterology; Colitis; Gastroenterologi; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Acute liver failure is accompanied by a high rate of bacterial septic complications. High portal level of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can lead to a pronounced secretion by Kupffer cells of pro-inflammatory mediators which have been shown to be early and important mediators of liver injury. 5. 5. Effects of enhanced ultraviolet-B radiation on subarctic ecosystems

    Författare :Carola Gehrke; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pigmentation; photosynthesis; dark respiration; shoot morphology; shoot growth; phanerogams ; species composition cryptogams; productivity; decomposition; dwarf shrubs; bryophytes; peatland ecosystem; heath ecosystem; UV-B; ozone depletion; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Biologically harmful ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280-320 nm) is increasing at the Earth´s surface owing to stratospheric ozone depletion. This is of global concern due to potential impacts of enhanced UV-B radiation on the biosphere. LÄS MER
