  1. 1. Disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis : Studies in interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor alpha, monocyte activity, acute phase markers, glucocorticoids, and disability

    Författare :Nils Gunnar Arvidson; Anders Larsson; Arvi Larsen; Øystein Førre; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; acute phase markers; circadian rhythm; disability; disease activity; glucocorticoids; monocyte activation; rheumatoid arthritis; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi; Medicine; medicin;

    Sammanfattning : In the present studies, aspects of some disease activity measures in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been investigated, including the effect of glucocorticoids on this activity. In RA, serum interleukin(IL)-6 levels were elevated and were shown to have a circadian rhythm, with peak levels in the morning, declining towards low or normal levels in the afternoon and evening. 2. 2. Serum Amyloid A Protein (SAA) in Healthy and Infected Individuals

    Författare :Anders Lannergård; Göran Friman; Anders Larsson; Uwe Ewald; Jonas Hedlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Communicable diseases; acute phase proteins; adult; Administration Oral; aminoglycosides; amyloidosis; antibiotics; bacterial infections; body temperature; C-reactive protein; cefuroxime; cystitis; cytokines; elderly; infant; interleukin-6; newborn; pyelonephritis; serum amyloid A protein; virus diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Sammanfattning : Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) is an acute phase protein that has recently gained increasing interest as a potential marker for disease and treatment monitoring. We investigated SAA and CRP levels in (a) patients with various common infectious diseases (n=98), (b) patients with pyelonephritis (n=37) versus patients with cystitis (n=32), (c) healthy individuals of varying ages (n=231), (d) very immature newborn infants with or without nosocomial infections (NIs) (n=72) and (e) patients with bacterial infections treated with cefuroxime (n=81). 3. 3. Studies on inflammation in the acute phase of aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

    Författare :Pavlos Vlachogiannis; Elisabeth Ronne-Engström; Lars Hillered; Johan Wikström; Bo-Michael Bellander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; subarachnoid hemorrhage SAH ; inflammation; Delayed Cerebral Ischemia DCI cerebral vasospasm; Proximity Extension Assay PEA technology; Neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Sammanfattning : Spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) accounts for 5% of all strokes and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Rupture of intracranial aneurysm is the cause in 85% of cases. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Serum lipoprotein(a) in relation to ischemic heart disease and associated risk factors

    Författare :Lisbeth Slunga; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lipoprotein a ; lipids; epidemiology; coronary artery disease; coronary angiography; HLA DR; acute-phase protein; myocardial infarction; HMG CoA reductase inhibitor; simvastatin;

    Sammanfattning : Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) consists of an LDL-like particle and the specific protein apo(a), which is very similar to plasminogen. Apo(a) contains repeated kringle structures and a serine protease domain, which cannot be activated by t-PA. Lp(a) is considered to be a predictor for atherosclerotic disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Novel endogenous mechanisms of complement regulation - A delicate balance

    Författare :Andreas Holmér; Malmö Klinisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; short leucine rich glycoprotein; factor H; C1q; age-related macular degeneration; C4b-binding protein; prion disease; prion protein; Complement regulation; C-reactive protein;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, the biochemical mechanisms for complement activation by endogenous proteins are explored. The short leucine-rich repeat proteins (SLRPs) help organise extracellular matrices. We found that several SLRPs bind C1q and of these, fibromodulin and osteoadherin trigger complement. LÄS MER
