    Sammanfattning : The aim of the dissertation is to study the distribution of literature as a means to disseminate knowledge in the context of two reading societies and three critical journals based in Uppsala and Åbo. This dissemination, regarded as a strategy towards social and political reform, took place in these societies and journals, which were geographically, biographically, intentionally and functionally connected.     Sammanfattning : The thesis focuses upon three universities in Sweden during its ‘Age of Greatness’, Uppsala, Dorpat and Åbo, with a special emphasis upon the universities academic jurisdiction. On the whole the universities saw State intervention as a useful tool in local conflicts with the surrounding town community but opposed that very same form of intervention when it tried to interfere in internal university matters.
