11. Medical, cognitive and motor outcome after treatment of pilocytic astrocytoma in the posterior fossa in childhood
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Pilocytic astrocytoma is the most common brain tumour in childhood. The aim of the studies was to investigate late medical, cognitive and motor complications in patients treated in childhood for pilocytic astrocytoma in the posterior fossa. LÄS MER
12. Growth control mechanisms in normal and neoplastic mammalian cells
Sammanfattning : The main theme of the studies presented in this thesis is, the growth control mechanisms whose loss in normal cells predispose to or cause cancer. The balance between growth inhibitory and stimulatory mechanisms is crucial for the development and maintenance of a normal animal. LÄS MER
13. Exploring novel therapeutic strategies in neuroblastoma
Sammanfattning : Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most frequently diagnosed extracranial tumour in children, which arises from transient embryonal tissue of the neural crest that fails to complete terminal differentiation into neurons. Even after completion of successful therapy, high risk neuroblastoma patients typically suffer from post-treatment induced toxicity which impacts on their ability to lead a normal life. LÄS MER
14. Extracellular Matrix and Connective Tissue Cells of the Tumor Microenvironment
Sammanfattning : In addition to malignant cells, solid tumors comprise supporting stromal tissue that consists of extra cellular matrix (ECM), connective tissue cells, inflammatory cells and blood vessels. The stromal compartment and the malignant cells together shape the tumor microenvironment that in turn determines tumor progression and efficacy of anti-tumor treatments. LÄS MER
15. Pharmacological Studies of CHS 828 and Etoposide Induced Tumour Cell Death
Sammanfattning : Antitumour properties of the cyanoguanidine CHS 828 and analogues were discovered in 1997. CHS 828 is presently in clinical phase I/II trials. This thesis encompasses in vitro studies of the kinetics and mode of cell death induced in the human cell line U-937 GTB, by CHS 828 and the standard antitumour drug etoposide. LÄS MER
