1. TGF-beta signaling in cancer
Sammanfattning : Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-β) is a cytokine regulating a wide range of cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and migration. At the early stages of cancer development TGF-β functions as a tumor suppressor, mainly due to its inhibitory effect on cellular growth, but during cancer progression, mutations in TGF-β signal components switches TGF-β into a promoter of cancer cell proliferation, survival and metastasis. 2. Studies of human endogenous retroviruses and of the TGF-beta signaling pathway
Sammanfattning : The human genome, in common with all mammalian genomes, carries a high load of inheritable retroviral sequences. We have identified and characterized a novel family of these endogenous retroviruses and have named this family HERV-F as based on the primer binding sites of three members. LÄS MER
3. Mechanisms for TGF-β-Mediated Regulation of the Actin Filament System and Apoptosis
Sammanfattning : Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is a member of a large superfamily of cytokines which participate in many different types of cellular processes, such as growth inhibition, cell migration, differentiation, cell adhesion, wound healing and immunosuppression. Alterations of TGF-β superfamily signalling results in several different disorders, including bone disease, vascular disease and cancer. LÄS MER
4. Growth factor regulation of the urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) system in human endometrium, and the significance of uPA receptor activation in endometrial angiogenesis
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis was to examine the role of growth factors and the urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) system in human endometrial angiogenesis. Growth factors as well as progesterone increased expression of the main inhibitor of uPA (PAI-1) in primary cultures of endometrial stromal cells. LÄS MER
5. Regulation of mucosal inflammation by fibroblasts
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Acute inflammation in the bowel, a response of the immune system to infections or trauma, is probably a frequent but localized event, but when the barrier is repaired and the infection cleared, it is quickly followed by wound healing and resolution. However, in some individuals these mechanisms are not effective and the inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn?s disease and ulcerative colitis result. LÄS MER
