21. Caspase activation in human neuroblastoma cells: mechanisms and spatiotemporal aspects
Sammanfattning : Apoptosis is one of the modes of programmed cell death, in which several members of the caspase family of proteases play the central role. However, activation of apoptotic caspases does not necessarily lead to cell death. LÄS MER
22. Bioinformatics studies on the mechanisms of gene regulation in vertebrates
Sammanfattning : Gene regulation implicates an important role in organismal complexity through contributing to phenotypic variation. In my thesis, I studied three diverse components of gene regulatory networks including transcription factors, DNA methylation and microRNAs to elucidate their role in vertebrates. LÄS MER
23. Cytokines as diagnostic biomarkers in canine pyometra and sepsis
Sammanfattning : Sepsis is a syndrome with high morbidity, mortality and astronomical health care costs and it is challenging to diagnose both in humans and animals due to the lack of suitable diagnostic biomarkers. Although several types of proteins have been suggested as diagnostic biomarkers of sepsis, none of them were shown to be reliable for routine use in the clinical practice. LÄS MER
24. Regulation of cell polarity and invasion by TGF-β and BMP signaling
Sammanfattning : Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathways are involved in many physiological processes during embryonic and adult life. TGF-β promotes epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT). We identified a gene target of TGF-β signaling, encoding the salt-inducible kinase 1 (SIK1). LÄS MER
25. Radiation response in human cells : DNA damage formation, repair and signaling
Sammanfattning : Ionizing radiation induces a range of different DNA lesions. In terms of mutation frequency and mammalian cell survival, the most critical of these lesions is the DNA double-strand break (DSB). DSB left unrepaired or mis-repaired may result in chromosomal aberrations that can lead to permanent genetic changes or cell death. LÄS MER
