  1. 1. Ribosome standby sites and other structural aspects of translation initiation regions in Escherichia coli

    Författare :Maaike M. Sterk; Gerhart E. H. Wagner; Fredrik Söderbom; Isabella Moll; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ribosome standby sites; translation initiation; mRNA structure; bacteria;

    Sammanfattning : Translation initiation, which is rate-limiting in protein synthesis, is often the step at which regulation occurs. Here, we investigated several mechanisms of translation initiation in Escherichia coli, including their control. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Small RNAs, Big Consequences : Post-transcriptional Regulation and Adaptive Immunity in Bacteria

    Författare :Mirthe Hoekzema; Gerhart E. H. Wagner; Magnus Lundgren; Kai Papenfort; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; small RNA; sRNA; non-coding RNA; Hfq; gene regulation; post-transcriptional regulation; biofilm; OmrA; OmrB; toxin-antitoxin; TisB; IstR-1; Persisters; CRISPR-Cas; CRISPR-Cas adaptation reporter; Escherichia coli; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : It is nowadays widely accepted that non-coding RNAs play important roles in post-transcriptional regulation of genes in all kingdoms of life. In bacteria, the largest group of RNA regulators are the small RNAs (sRNAs). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Molecular analysis of transcription factors in uropathogenic E. coli adhesin operons

    Författare :Stina Lindberg; Bernt Eric Uhlin; Åsa Sjöling; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; UPEC; E. coli; F1C; P fimbriae; cross-talk; FocB; PapB; crystal structure; OMVs; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The main causative agent of human urinary tract infections is the uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) pathotype. It may cause disease due to its ability to express a number of bacterial virulence factors. Fimbrial adhesins are particularly important for the initial establishment of infection in the urinary tract. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Pathogenecity-associated genes modulate Escherichia coli adhesion and motility

    Författare :Annika E. Sjöström; Bernt Eric Uhlin; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Escherichia coli strains typical of UPEC (uropathogenic E. coli) and NBM (newborn meningitis) isolates carry chromosomally located PAIs (pathogenicity islands) that are absent in non-pathogenic E. coli strains. The PAIs include genes for virulence factors such as toxins and genes coding for specific adhesins and pili/fimbriae formation. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Small Molecules as Tools in Biological Chemistry : Effects of Synthetic and Natural Products on the Type III Secretion System

    Författare :Caroline E. Zetterström; Mikael Elofsson; Samuel I. Miller; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Type III secretion; salicylidene acylhydrazide; virulence-blocker; virulence; inhibitor; target identification; neohopeaphenol A; Yersinia pseudotuberculosis; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Escherichia coli; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : The increasing use of antibiotics has led to a huge problem for society, as some bacteria have developed resistance towards many of the antibiotics currently available. To help find solutions to this problem we studied small molecules that inhibit bacterial virulence, the ability to cause disease. LÄS MER
