  1. 1. Physiology of Adventure Racing : with emphasis on circulatory response and cardiac fatigue

    Författare :C. Mikael Mattsson; Björn Ekblom; Keith P George; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiovascular drift; cardiac fatigue; adventure race; cardiac biomarkers; cardoac function; exercise echocardiography; Physiology; Fysiologi; Cardiology; Kardiologi; Sports; Idrott; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aims of this thesis were to elucidate the circulatory responses to ultra-endurance exercise (Adventure Racing), and furthermore, to contribute to the clarification of the so called “exercise-induced cardiac fatigue” in relation to said exercise. An Adventure race (AR) varies in duration from six hours to over six days, in which the participants have to navigate through a number of check-points over a pre-set course, using a combination of three or more endurance/outdoor sports, e. 2. 2. Strain echocardiography in cardiac surgery - studies on the effects of loading conditions and inotropic agents on myocardial contraction and relaxation

    Författare :Martin Fredholm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; strain echocardiography; right heart catheterization; cardiac surgery; heart failure; levosimendan; milrinone; left ventricular function; right ventricular function; systole; diastole; preload; afterload; pacing; longitudinal function; ventricular dimensions; ventricular interdependence;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Although reductions in myocardial contractility and relaxation are key compo-nents in heart failure (HF), assessment of them is difficult, as clinical measurements deal with a net effect of myocardial contractility, heart filling (preload), outflow impedance (afterload) and heart rate (HR). Echocardiographic (echo) deformation parameters, like strain (myocardial shortening) and strain rate (the speed of deformation, SR), have been proposed to more accu-rately measure myocardial function, but incongruent previous studies have raised concerns that they may be load-dependent. 3. 3. Pump Physiology in the Remodeled Heart

    Författare :Björn Östenson; Lund Klinisk fysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiac magnetic resonance; cardiac remodeling; exercise imaging; exercise physiology; regional contributions to stroke volume; feature-tracking strain; atrioventricular plane displacement; atrioventricular coupling; ventricular-arterial coupling; clinical physiology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aimed to increase the understanding of pump physiology in the remodeled heart compared to normal pump physiology.Study I was a cross-sectional observatory study investigating the regional contributions to stroke volume in patients with heart failure prior to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and tested the hypothesis that this characterization of pumping could predict CRT response. 4. 4. Oxygen Metabolism in Experimental Kidney Disease

    Författare :Ebba Sivertsson; Fredrik Palm; Peter Hansell; Jenny Nyström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kidney; kidney oxygenation; mitochondria; proteinuria; uncoupling protein; adenosine nucleotide transporter; diabetes; hyperthyroidism; thyroid hormone; hypertension; angiotensin II; CDK; AST-120; rats; mice; Fysiologi; Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Tubulointerstitial hypoxia has been proposed a unifying mechanism behind the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD), regardless of primary diagnosis. Important factors that contribute to the development of hypoxia are reduced bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO), oxidative stress and mitochondria uncoupling. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Cardiovascular regulation in women with vasovagal syncope : With special reference to the venous system

    Författare :Johan Skoog; Toste Länne; Marcus Lindenberger; Helene Zachrisson; Ola Eiken; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Although vasovagal syncope (VVS) is a common clinical condition the mechanisms behind VVS remain elusive. Upright posture is the major trigger of VVS and lower limb blood pooling affecting cardiac output has been proposed as a major determinant. The overall aim of this thesis was twofold. LÄS MER
