Sammanfattning : Background Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure carried out in the developed world and surgery volumes have increased considerably during the last decades. Various aspects of the surgical procedure, including surgical incision size and intraocular lens materials, have changed substantially, improving the safety and the quality of the outcome. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : The general aim of the thesis was to investigate potential differences in memory performance between participants across the adult life span with and without self-reported musculoskeletal pain. Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a major health related problem in our society. LÄS MER
4. Brain characteristics of memory decline and stability in aging : Contributions from longitudinal observations
Sammanfattning : Aging is typically associated with declining mental abilities, most prominent for some forms of memory. There are, however, large inter-individual differences within the older population. Some people experience rapid decline whereas others seem almost spared from any adverse effects of aging. LÄS MER
5. Strain echocardiography in cardiac surgery - studies on the effects of loading conditions and inotropic agents on myocardial contraction and relaxation
Sammanfattning : Background: Although reductions in myocardial contractility and relaxation are key compo-nents in heart failure (HF), assessment of them is difficult, as clinical measurements deal with a net effect of myocardial contractility, heart filling (preload), outflow impedance (afterload) and heart rate (HR). Echocardiographic (echo) deformation parameters, like strain (myocardial shortening) and strain rate (the speed of deformation, SR), have been proposed to more accu-rately measure myocardial function, but incongruent previous studies have raised concerns that they may be load-dependent.
