  1. 1. Physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and abdominal obesity in relation to cardiovascular disease risk : epidemiological studies

    Författare :Elin Ekblom Bak; Mai-Lis Hellénius; Björn Ekblom; David Dunstan; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Sammanfattning : Although Sweden saw a decline in death rates related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) between 1987 and 2011, it is still the most common cause of death for both women and men. Lifestyle-related factors such as inadequate physical activity (PA), poor cardiorespiratory fitness (CF), and excess body fat are all recognised as important predictors of CVD morbidity and mortality. 2. 2. Physiology of Adventure Racing : with emphasis on circulatory response and cardiac fatigue

    Författare :C. Mikael Mattsson; Björn Ekblom; Keith P George; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

    Sammanfattning : The overall aims of this thesis were to elucidate the circulatory responses to ultra-endurance exercise (Adventure Racing), and furthermore, to contribute to the clarification of the so called “exercise-induced cardiac fatigue” in relation to said exercise. An Adventure race (AR) varies in duration from six hours to over six days, in which the participants have to navigate through a number of check-points over a pre-set course, using a combination of three or more endurance/outdoor sports, e. 4. 4. Dietary inorganic nitrate : role in exercise physiology, cardiovascular and metabolic regulation

    Författare :Filip J. Larsen; Jon Lundberg; Eddie Weitzberg; Björn Ekblom; Victor M Darley-Usmar; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous signaling molecule with a vast number of tasks in the body, including regulation of cardiovascular and metabolic function. A decreased bioavailability of NO is a central event in disorders such as hypertension and metabolic syndrome. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Physical fitness and overweight in Swedish youths

    Författare :Örjan Ekblom; P-O Åstrand; Pekka Oja; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Övervikt hos barn; Övervikt hos ungdomar; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology; Adolescents; children; physical performance; fitness; trend; overweight; Sweden;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the present thesis was to describe the level of physical fitness and prevalence of overweight and obesity in Swedish youths, and their trends over 14 years. Additionally, the relation between fitness and overweight on the one hand and physical activity on the other was examined. LÄS MER
