1. Studies in Glacier Mass Balance : Measurement and its errors
Sammanfattning : The study of the surface mass balance of valley glaciers has a long history but one that is dogged by uncertainty and errors, and uncertainty about those errors. These problems are acknowledged by the glaciological community and have been examined and formalised in several publications. LÄS MER
2. Model-based coding : extraction, coding, and evaluation of face model parameters
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with model-based coding of human faces for low bitrate communication. The basicidea of model-based coding is that the appearance and motion of a human face are analysed. By thisanalysis, compact parameters allowing realistic visualization of a synthetic face are extracted. LÄS MER
3. Molecular mechanisms and biological consequences of the production of non-canonical D-amino acids in bacteria
Sammanfattning : Most bacteria possess a vital net-like macromolecule – peptidoglycan (PG). PG encases bacteria around the cytoplasmic membrane to withstand the high internal turgor pressure and thereby protect the cell from bursting. In addition, PG is a major morphological determinant of bacteria being both required and sufficient to maintain cell shape. LÄS MER
4. Overlapping Neural Substrates of Alcohol- and Anxiety-Related Behavior in the Rat
Sammanfattning : Alcohol use is a leading cause of death and disease worldwide. A large part of this disease burden is associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD), a diagnostic category characterized by excessive use in spite of negative consequences ("compulsive use"), a loss of control over intake, and choice of alcohol over natural rewards. 5. Benefits of Non-Linear Mixed Effect Modeling and Optimal Design : Pre-Clinical and Clinical Study Applications
Sammanfattning : Despite the growing promise of pharmaceutical research, inferior experimentation or interpretation of data can inhibit breakthrough molecules from finding their way out of research institutions and reaching patients. This thesis provides evidence that better characterization of pre-clinical and clinical data can be accomplished using non-linear mixed effect modeling (NLMEM) and more effective experiments can be conducted using optimal design (OD).
