  1. 1. Molecular mechanisms and biological consequences of the production of non-canonical D-amino acids in bacteria

    Författare :Alena Aliashkevich; Felipe Cava; Fredrik Almqvist; Andrew J Roe; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacteria; cell wall; peptidoglycan; D-amino acids; LD-transpeptidase;

    Sammanfattning : Most bacteria possess a vital net-like macromolecule – peptidoglycan (PG). PG encases bacteria around the cytoplasmic membrane to withstand the high internal turgor pressure and thereby protect the cell from bursting. In addition, PG is a major morphological determinant of bacteria being both required and sufficient to maintain cell shape. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Nanoscopic adventures : unraveling macromolecular complexes in infectious diseases via integrative structural biology

    Författare :Kai Patric Ehrenbolger; Ronnie Berntsson; Felipe Cava; Jonas Barandun; David Drew; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Infectious diseases; E. faecalis; Microsporidia; Ribosome; Proteasome; Polar Tube; Structural Biology; Single particle Cryo-Electron Microscopy;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases, which claim nearly 9 million lives annually. The research centers on critical analysis of pathogen mechanisms and drug resistance. I have mainly focused on two clades of pathogens: Enterococcus faecalis and microsporidia. E. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Uncovering novel cell wall chemistries in gram negative bacteria : from development or dedicated peptidoglycan chemometric tools to functional genomics

    Författare :Akbar Espaillat; Felipe Cava; Sun Nyunt Wai; Waldemar Vollmer; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacteria; cell wall; peptidoglycan; peptidoglycan variations; D-amino acids; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria are surrounded by an external cell wall whose main component is a polymeric net-like structure called the peptidoglycan (PG) or murein sacculus. PG plays crucial roles in bacterial physiology (eg morphogenesis, growth fitness and regulation of innate immunity). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Studies on cell wall recycling and modification in Gram-negative bacteria

    Författare :Michael C. Gilmore; Felipe Cava; Peter A Lind; Teresa Frisan; Jean-François Collet; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Peptidoglycan recycling; bacterial cell wall; antibiotics; Agrobacterium tumefaciens; Escherichia coli; Legionella pneumophila; mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : The bacterial cell wall is made from peptidoglycan (PG), a heteropolymer which forms a bag-like exoskeleton that envelopes the cell. PG is constantly remodelled during growth and division, and in response to environmental stimuli. LÄS MER
