26. Functional and structural characterizations of phytoplankton-bacteria interactions in response to environmental challenges
Sammanfattning : Microorganisms, such as phytoplankton and bacteria, make up ≈70% of aquatic biomass and contribute 50-85% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. The microbial loop concept and the discovery of the large diversity in microbial communities acknowledge that biotic interactions between microorganisms in addition to resource competition enable the recycling of energy and nutrients in aquatic food webs. 27. Quality Assurance of Time Critical Data Using Adaptive Data Delivery Mechanisms in Smart Grids
Sammanfattning : Smart grids are proposed to integrate renewable energy and to improve the efficiency of power system operation. The challenges of integrating renewable energy are the inherent fluctuations of generation which are difficult to predict which may lead to challenges to the safe operation of power systems. LÄS MER
28. Reinforcement Learning Using Local Adaptive Models
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, the theory of reinforcement learning is described and its relation to learning in biological systems is discussed. Some basic issues in reinforcement learning, the credit assignment problem and perceptual aliasing, are considered. The methods of temporal difference are described. LÄS MER
29. Designer magnetoplasmonics for adaptive nano-optics
Sammanfattning : Materials that provide real-time control of the fundamental properties of light at visible and near-infrared frequencies enable the essential components for future optical devices. Metal nanostructures that couple electromagnetic (EM) radiation on a sub-wavelength length scale to free electrons, forming propagating or localized surface plasmons, provide many exciting functionalities due to their ability to manipulate light via the local EM field shaping and enhancement. 30. Studies of the pathogenesis of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli infections: pathogen virulence factors and host response
Sammanfattning : Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) is a highly virulent pathogen that can cause diarrhea and a life-threatening disease known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. EHEC possess an array of virulence factors that can exert severe consequences in the host. Shiga toxin constitutes a key virulence factor. LÄS MER
