  1. 1. Insulin signaling and glucose transport in insulin resistant human skeletal muscle

    Författare :Håkan K R Karlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Skeletal muscle; insulin resistance; type 2 diabetes; glucose transport; insulin signaling; first-degree relatives; AS160; SelS; rosiglitazone treatment;

    Sammanfattning : Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle is a hallmark feature of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate downstream intermediates in the insulin signaling pathway in an attempt to characterize the molecular mechanism of skeletal muscle insulin resistance in Type 2 diabetes. 2. 2. Effects of immunosuppressive drugs on human adipose tissue metabolism

    Författare :Maria J Pereira; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cyclosporin A; tacrolimus; rapamycin; glucocorticoids; new onset diabetes after transplantation; adipocytes; insulin signalling; glucose uptake; lipolysis; lipogenesis;

    Sammanfattning : The immunosuppressive agents (IAs) rapamycin, cyclosporin A and tacrolimus, as well as glucocorticoids are used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs and to treat autoimmune disorders. Despite their desired action on the immune system, these agents have serious long-term metabolic side-effects, including dyslipidemia and new onset diabetes mellitus after transplantation. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Molecular mechanisms governing contraction-induced metabolic responses and skeletal muscle reprogramming

    Författare :Stephan Glund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :AMP-activated protein kinase; interleukin-6; exercise; glucose metabolism; lipid metabolism; adaptation to exercise.;

    Sammanfattning : Physical exercise enhances skeletal muscle responsiveness to insulin and regulates metabolism by an insulin-independent mechanism. Elucidation of contraction-mediated molecular mechanisms is imperative for a better understanding of skeletal muscle metabolism and function, and may lead to the identification or validation of possible drug targets for the prevention or treatment of metabolic disorders. 4. 4. Studies on exercise and glycogen re-synthesis in skeletal muscles of pigs with the PRKAG3 mutation

    Författare :Anna Granlund; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays an important role in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle. Many pigs of Hampshire origin have a naturally occurring mutation situated in the PRKAG3 gene which encodes a muscle-specific isoform of the AMPK γ3-subunit. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Nutrient and energy sensing in skeletal muscle

    Författare :Atul S Deshmukh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Skeletal muscle; AMPK; mTOR; glucose metabolism; exercise; Akt; TBC1D1 D4; CaMK; NO-cGMP;

    Sammanfattning : Nutrient overload and physical inactivity often leads to the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Acute over-nutrition can induce insulin resistance, while physical exercise enhances skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity. Like every living cell, skeletal muscle senses nutrient and energy signals and to adjust metabolic flux. LÄS MER
