  1. 16. Respiratory and cardiovascular effects of exposure to oxidative air pollutants

    Författare :Stefan Barath; Ellinor Ädelroth; Anders Blomberg; E David Newby; M Howard Kipen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Air Pollution; Particulate Matter; Diesel Exhaust; Ozone; Experimental Exposure studies; Luftföroreningar; Partiklar; Disel avgaser; ozon; Experimentella exponerings studier; Internal medicine; Invärtesmedicin; lungmedicin; Lung Medicine; kardiologi; Cardiology; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The negative effects of air pollution on morbidity and mortality have been known since the mid 20th century. The two most well known examples are the Meuse Valley disaster in the 1930’ies and the London black fog in December 1952. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Aspects of infection and leukemia in Rwanda

    Författare :Belson Rugwizangoga; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; interferon-λ; respiratory infection; nucleotide polymorphism; acute leukemia; Rwanda; Epstein-Barr virus; malaria;

    Sammanfattning : A first part of this thesis addressed the potential impact of variants of genes encoding interferon-λ4, which is a cytokine that participates in protection against pathogens at epithelial surfaces, for the resolution of upper respiratory tract infections in Rwandan children. In a study of 480 subjects (≤5 years old), where follow-up samples were available from 161 subjects, it was observed that IFNL4 genotypes were associated with clearance of RNA viruses from upper airways. 3. 18. Nitric Oxide Exchange in Central and Peripheral Airways : Determinants in Health and Respiratory Disease

    Författare :Andrei Malinovschi; Christer Janson; Kjell Alving; Lena Holm; Elisabeth Bel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :exhaled nitric oxide; alveolar NO; bronchial NO flux; extended NO analysis; asthma; smoking; snus; IgE-sensitization; pharyngo-oral tract; nitrate; nitrite; pulmonary hypertension;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) is a marker of eosinophilic steroid-sensitive inflammation in the airways of patients with respiratory disease. Moreover, information about the localization of inflammation in the respiratory tree is obtained by estimates of bronchial and alveolar contributions to exhaled NO. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Mycobacterial infection: Immune evasion, host susceptibility and immunological markers of diagnostic importance

    Författare :John Arko-Mensah; Carmen Fernandez; Francesco Dieli; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mycobacteria; Mice; Toll-like receptors; interferon gamma; immunological markers; lung; respiratory tract; susceptibility; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : IIn the first study, we investigated the functional implications of prolonged TLR signalling on IFN-γ mediated killing of mycobacteria by murine macrophages in vitro. TLR2, but not TLR4 ligation interfered with IFN-γ mediated killing of mycobacteria in macrophages. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Rules of Thumb and Management of Common Infections in General Practice

    Författare :Malin André; Norbert Donner-Banzhoff; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; General practice; rules of thumb; decision making; respiratory tract infections; urinary tract infections; diagnostic tests; C-reactive protein test; antibiotic prescribing; Urology and andrology; Urologi och andrologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with problem solving of general practitioners (GPs), which is explored with different methods and from different perspectives. The general aim was to explore and describe rules of thumb and to analyse the management of respiratory and urinary tract infections (RTI and UTI) in general practice in Sweden. LÄS MER
