  1. 1. Nitric Oxide Exchange in Central and Peripheral Airways : Determinants in Health and Respiratory Disease

    Författare :Andrei Malinovschi; Christer Janson; Kjell Alving; Lena Holm; Elisabeth Bel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :exhaled nitric oxide; alveolar NO; bronchial NO flux; extended NO analysis; asthma; smoking; snus; IgE-sensitization; pharyngo-oral tract; nitrate; nitrite; pulmonary hypertension;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) is a marker of eosinophilic steroid-sensitive inflammation in the airways of patients with respiratory disease. Moreover, information about the localization of inflammation in the respiratory tree is obtained by estimates of bronchial and alveolar contributions to exhaled NO. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects

    Författare :Grethe Neumann Andersen; Solbritt Rantapää Dahlqvist; Lucia Mincheva-Nilsson; Sören Jacobsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic sclerosis; interstitial lung disease; MMP-9; Th1 Th2; transcription factors; NO; iNOS; E-selectin; endothelium-dependent dilation; endothelium-independent dilation.; Rheumatology; Reumatologi;

    Sammanfattning : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 3. 3. Development and regulation of alveolar fluid clearance in the guinea pig

    Författare :Andreas Norlin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; oxytocin-induced preterm labor; IRDS; fetal lung fluid; preterm lung development; amiloride-sensitive sodium channels; beta-adrenergic stimulation; alveolar epithelium; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Alveolar fluid clearance is driven by active absorption of Na+ across the alveolar epithelium. Development and hormonal regulation of alveolar fluid clearance over 1 hour was studied by instillation of a protein-containing, isosmolar fluid into lungs of fetal, newborn, and adult guinea pigs. 4. 4. Exahaled NO and small airway function in asthma and cystic fibrosis

    Författare :Christina Keen; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; asthma; exhaled NO; children; cystic fibrosis; flow independent exhaled nitric oxide; multiple breath inert gas washout; polyunsaturated fatty acids;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Asthma and cystic fibrosis (CF) are chronic inflammatory airway disorders known to involve the peripheral airways. Non-invasive tests sensitive to peripheral airway function and inflammation are therefore of high priority. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Towards Improved Diagnostics and Monitoring in Childhood Asthma : Methodological and Clinical Aspects of Exhaled NO and Forced Oscillation Technique

    Författare :Charlotte Heijkenskjöld Rentzhog; Malinovschi Andrei; Lennart Nordvall; Kjell Alving; Lauri Lehtimäki; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; asthma; children; exhaled NO; forced oscillation technique; airway inflammation; small airways; asthma diagnostics; Pediatrik; Pediatrics; Lungmedicin; Lung Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease. Diagnosis relies on symptom evaluation and lung function tests using spirometry. Symptoms can be vague. Spirometry is effort-dependent and does not reliably evaluate small airways. LÄS MER
