16. Serglycin-dependent mast cell-specific proteases and their potential interactions with Giardia intestinalis
Sammanfattning : Mast cells are located in mucosal and connective tissues throughout the body where they play important roles in immune reactions towards infections. Mast cell deficiency results in failure of clearance of the non-invasive intestinal protozoan parasite Giardia intestinalis in mice, but the mast cell-driven mechanisms remain poorly understood. 17. Evolution and host-specific adaptations of Legionella pneumophila
Sammanfattning : How bacteria evolve pathogenic traits is shaped by their communities and environments. Legionella pneumophila is ubiquitous in aquatic habitats, where it persists by replicating within a broad range of protozoan hosts. Using the same mechanisms, L. LÄS MER
18. Plasmodium falciparum drug transporter genes in emerging malaria multidrug resistance
Sammanfattning : Malaria is caused by an intracellular protozoan parasite of the genus Plasmodium. The use of chemotherapy, the foremost tool available for the control of the disease, has been challenged in the last decades by the development and spread of drug resistance among malaria parasites. 19. Membrane morphology and homeostasis: An electron microscopy approach
Sammanfattning : Biological membranes allow life as we know it to exist. Primarily assembled from lipids and proteins, their morphology and function can greatly vary between species or even within the same cell. They create physical boundaries, separating different cells from each other and forming functional compartments within the cells. LÄS MER
20. Mechanisms structuring the pelagic microbial food web : Importance of resource and predation
Sammanfattning : Temporal and spatial variations of pelagic microorganisms in the northern Baltic Sea were studied, as well as factors influencing their abundance and growth rates. Three main questions were asked 1) How does increased productivity influence the structure of the microbial food web? 2) Does predation limitation vary between trophic levels? 3) What is the relative importance of resource and predation limitation at different trophic levels?A field study in the northern Baltic Sea showed that dominating protozoa, flagellates and ciliates, increased with increasing primary productivity from north to south.
